Though I'm not the person who can help you, others who can will want to know the details of your system: vid card, operating system, memory, cpu type, background programs like AV etc that you have running, network details (router? firewall?). I hope you solve it. Your problem reads like ones related to a firewall and there are some good advisors here who can help with that.

Don't run iTunes or MSN messenger while you're logged into SL. At least not for the time being. AntiVirus & Firewall are essential but can cause problems. I'm not very technical, but I'll throw what suggestions come to mind.

First, make sure you have recent drivers for your video card. To find out which video card you have go to your control panel > system > device manager and then click on the icon for 'display adapters'. Do the same for your soundcard with the 'sound video and game controllers' icon. then go to the manufacturer's website and download & install the latest drivers. Do you have DirectX 9 installed? If not you should. You can get it free from the microsoft website.

Have you installed the latest drivers for your computer motherboard chipset (usually VIA, nVidia, Intel or SiS)? Once again they're available from the manufacturer's websites. How much memory does your computer have? Anything less that 256mb RAM and 64mb video RAM is going to be a rough ride in SL. SL is very demanding on your system ressources.

However, there is hope! Set your draw distance to 64 or 96 metres, switch off shiny and local lighting. Set ground detail to 'low', move the detail sliders for avatars, flexi prims, trees, etc., fairly low. Set you maximum particle count to 1024 or 2048. It sounds drastic, but the idea is to get a stable experience in SL, then you can start adding the bells and whistles bit by bit once your computer can cope.

What firewall are you using? You want to make sure that your Second Life client can act as both a server and a client, ie: connect outwards and accept inbound connections.

When was the last time you defragmented your hard disk? It's a good idea to defrag your main partition at least once a month.

It's probably your video card and driver. Not all cards are supported and if you don't have the latest driver it will likely not work.
