Since the latest client, every time I open SL or go back after a crash ... "must download" so I say yes and it pretty much instantly confirms I have the download ... and then confirms it is already installed.
DAMNED annoying, any ideas anyone?

This is an unplanned bonus feature which will add to your SL enjoyment by adding predictability to your login process. *grin* File a ticket.

I'm sorry but anything which involves an element of chance (e.g. unpredictability) whereby you can win something of value (e.g. ability to log into SL) is not allowed in SL.

Firstly, if you're running SL on a multi-user machine (ie. one upon which you don't normally have Administrator privileges), then login as Administrator, launch SL and allow it to update. That might be enough to fix it. Alternatively, it's possible your settings have become corrupted and SL can't update the tags relating to this update in your settings.xml file so it keeps trying to download it again. If you're not overly attached to your current settings and don't mind starting with the defaults again, try deleting it (I'm not promising this will work; it's just a theory ). The location of the file on a PC can vary depending on your user settings, but if you launch Second Life, click Preferences and hit the Network tab, you should see a cache directory listed. Something like: C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\SecondLife\cache Trim \cache from the end, and navigate to that folder in Explorer. Double click the user_settings folder. Delete settings.xml. Launch SL. Cross fingers. Pray to God for no more ungodly update annoyances.

Matthew Hmmm. Maybe Matthew's rather bizarre misposting is the key. MAYBE the logging in is now itself some form of random number generated event!

It sounds to me like the OP is getting the Optional New Viewer dialogue every log in. If that's the case, I don't know why you would keep getting the message if it's installed, but you should be able to click "Continue" (instead of "Download" and ignore it.

Thanks Mickey (hey I am an original poster!! BEAMS) but it's not the optional update it's the mandatory one. Object, I think you are onto something as the PATH does not exist as written in the client. Fed up for tonight but will investigate this in the morning. I am thinking a complete uninstall and reinstall might help.

I am thinking a complete uninstall and reinstall might help. Path doesn't exist? Wow. That is odd! Sounds like it's failed to write any settings information at all, and that's why it keeps trying to roll forward. It doesn't know it exists. (I know how it feels.) Anybody else with this problem missing cache directory information in Edit > Preferences > Network tab too? Maybe we get to the bottom of this - or figure a workaround - without waiting for results through Jira.

Wiping out the whole settings directory structure might be a good idea. Everything under the following folder... C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\SecondLife\ Obviously the <Username> bit of the directory name will be different on your machine.
