Group Liabilities - what are they?

In the last few days I have seen some posts about people being charged for group liabilities.

How does a group acquire a liability?

How can I check if any of the groups I belong to have any liabilities?

I hate the thought of logging on one day and finding my lindens gone to pay for some group liability.

*looks at her groups list and wonders if she really needs to be in all of them*

Hey I`m wondering the same thing

It seems the less people in the group the more I pay. For instance the other day I saw I had taken from me about 26L to pay for a group liability, the group had about 7 members.

If it is a larger group I see only small amounts like $1L taken from me.

But what are these for and why aren`t we warned about them before joining groups?

Does your group own land? I would imagine one liabiity is paying tier.

What I understand about Group Liabilities, it can be either tier and/or the L$30 per week for having the parcel in search.

If you're worried that you belong to groups which may charge you, just ask the owner of the group.

I've had this happen once and the owner wasn't aware he had the settings marked incorrectly.

Wow I didn`t know it charged the GROUP for land listing fees. I thought it came straight out of the owners account.

After reading the above line I went into one of the groups I am a member of and checked the member roles abilities.

It seems there is an option under group role abilites called ACCOUNTING which has one entry PAY GROUP LIABILITIES AND RECEIVE GROUP DIVIDENDS.

So I am assuming if this is UNCHECKED for your role in the group (ie it might be checked for officers but not for general members) then I assume I am safe and will not be charged liabilites.

Thanks for your post Arikinui, until I saw that I didn't even realize this could be set.

*heads off to check the rest of the groups I am a member of*

*sigh* Seems most groups have this option turned ON (checked) for general members. I guess it is set on as a default when a group is created.

Tier is never a group liability, so there's no need to worry that joining a group suddenly makes you liable for the land upkeep in any way :).
