According to the SLEconomics page SL the average price for land so far this month is L$6.59/SM x 512 SM = L$3,374 for average land. But you also need to look at what other land is sellling for in the area and take that into consideration.

I couldn't find any 'first land' when I wanted land... So I did a land search, ended up in Borden, where 512m was going for $4600. I guess it was a lil pricey but there are some really beautiful properties there.

First land is L$ 512 for 512 square meters.
Even if you don't like the location, buy it and then resell it for L$4k or more. Then use that money to buy land somewhere that YOU like. A tip on that: buy on a roadside or waterfront that borders Linden land (owned by Gov. Linden). Then you are guaranteed to have one side that isn't a casino, billboard, or dance club.

I've just posted in a very similar thread so won't repeat myself entirely. I think I'm lucky where I bought; a hillside, bordering a wooded area. Most neighbours seem happy building residences. My next door neighbour resold within minutes at $3000 and the new owner was asking $6000 10 minutes later so I'm keeping a wary eye. What might seem a poor area to begin with can change, up or down. See Ordinal's sequence of events in the other first land thread.

From: bilbo99 Emu What might seem a poor area to begin with can change, up or down. See Ordinal's sequence of events in the other first land thread. Exactly, and with enough patience, even a bad neighbourhood isn't so bad. The area I live in has had its share of clubs, stores, malls, and even a police station. And now, the whole thing is a quiet forest that spans two sims. Granted, I had to buy all that land to make the forest, but I'm rather proud of the fact that I've been in the same spot over a year and a half, and it's proven to be a worthwhile investment. Sometimes a sim gets irreversibly screwed up by commercial establishments. However, the best thing you can do is make friends with your neighbours. The ones you're friendly with will often stay as long as you do, and the ones who don't have that connection to the community will inevitably shut down after a few months. Another idea that I haven't really seen in awhile is to set up a neighbourhood or homeowners' association, with a group for all the residents in the area. This was done in my First Land sim, though I foolishly moved out in search of greener pastures. Now, almost two years later, the same group owns the entire sim, and they've turned it into a collectively-owned park.
