Well, The Radon series is in general not a good bet. I;m sure there are many who would dissagree however. If, your still running an AGP board I would reccomend the BFG 7800gs as a good all around video solution but I'm sure you could get away with anything from the 6-7 series in general. PCIE? An Nvidia 7 series or one of the ATI X cards would be a good bet. Just be sure that any card you get supports opengl 1.5 or better. I hope this helps and I hope you get plenty more suggestions from others in these forums before making your final decision.

I know nothing about video cards but I do know that my Nvidia 6800 GPU card has never crashed and delivers excellent performance. They probably don't even make them anymore but I am sure you could find some for sale on the net at an inexpensive price.

Nvidia 6 series +
anything with a gt or gs in the model
the gs/gt/gts model of nvidia cards are the top end of their models
ie
ive got a nvidia 6600 and a nvidia 6600 gt
they both have 256mb of memory BUT the 6600 runs at 433 (?) mhz and the GT runs at 966 mhz
but a 6900GT would be faster than my 6600GT
sooo get the higest model number with a gt (you can afford) and you should be happy
just be aware of what your computer can take, as far as slots go (ie AGP or PCI-E)

To be honest, buying a nVida card less than the 7 series, is like buying remoulded tyres, you will be upgrading soon again. I run a 7900GT 256mb ddr2 which gives me between 25-100+ fps in a PCI-E+ slot. Bought it off ebay new, cost me around £70 ($140).

Man, my Radeon 9550 is still doing sterling service. Are you sure it's a hardware problem with your card? I'd suggest exploring other avenues, like clearing your cache, reviewing your preferences, mebbe a defrag.

We could get SL to run on that for nothing. I swear it looked at me and laughed. Right now, my Radeon X300 machine is having issues that are probably unrelated to the video card. (Dude, it's a DELL! Need I say more?) But when it's happy, it runs great!

Sorry Raudf, I've read this a dozen times and still can't get it. Did your 9550 run SL or not? LOL I only upgraded to the 9550 in November last having run SL creakingly for a month on a 7500

I’m running the OEM Nvidia 7500LE. They mostly came with the high end HP Media Center PCs. Anyway it’s doing just fine. I get between 30 and 50 FPS most of the time. My notebook has the ATI X600 and it does nicely also. The key is to keep the drivers up to date and check your cable modem. Unplugging your modem once a week for 30 seconds really can make a difference. Along with the other yada yada yada! OBTW….my next card will would be a Nvidia 8000 series.

I should say it did, but very, very, very lagged out, more like a slide show than an actual world But it handles the demands of my kid's preschool games rather nicely.
