by agreement with the land owner I am going to place an object on their land. What is the best way to do this without the object being returned back to my inventory?

In the objects tab in about land, the time for object return must be set to 0. Otherwise it will either be instantly returned if it is set to 1 or returned in the amount of minutes specified. As long as it is set to 0, you (and anyone else) can set an object there.

Options:

1: If ownership doesn't count, give it to them and have them place it.

If it is something you must own, like a SL Boutique vendor prim:

2: If the land owner sets autoreturn to zero, then anyone at all can dump garbage on his parcel. Not good.

3: The owner of the land must have or create a group, and assign the land to that group. He invites you to that group. You place the item while you're wearing that group tag. Now, if he has auto-return on, yuor prim will stay, because it 'belongs there' as a group member.

And if I choose to leave the group do I still remain owner of the object with edit ability to the scripts?

can I still be owner with edit ability?

what we are trying to accomplish is placing an object on a groups property (by agreement with land owner), have the object not be returned (answered already, thx) and still allow me to be the owner of the object with edit ability. All this without having to bother the land owner who was kind enough to say yes we can place that object there.

Yes - as long as you do not "deed" the object to the group - only "set" it - you are still the owner of the object and have the ability to edit it.
