I opened my sim to general access this morning, and as well as a visit from the infamous Grid Shepherd (who has been kicked and banned!), I've also had about three or four visits from what I suspect to be bots - typically the avatar is a naked Ruth with no entries or groups in their profile (and some are over six months old, so you'd expect them to have at least found some clothes if not edited their profile by now) who then flies around and around the sim multiple times, not reponding to IMs or chat (if you can get remain close enough whilst typing), and then goes.
I recall having heard about community maintained ban lists - are there any lists of known bots (including details of who owns them, and what they are scanning/being used for).

Pretty sure those are people, not bots. Bots will only bother you if you set your land for sale too low. The arbor project has an object that bans know cutters of land who sell 16 meter plots for spam and advertising. Ask any member about the clocktower object.

Why is grid shephard banned? I just looked into his profile and found it disturbing to name it somehow I've seen him too many times in the last few days in many many places

Grid Shepherd is the ESC bot that scans objects in sims, if I recall correctly, listing some of the ones for sale in a database. Nothing particulary scary about bots; they are just hyperefficient extensions of our will, doing what the controlling humans would do themselves if only they could. As for banning them, I don't think there is a banlist big enough to even scratch the number of active bots out there. Nor would it help much. Some just hammer the database from one place, and it's just too easy to send a different avatar should anything 'worthy' come up to investigate. ESC is different only insofar as they 'came clean' about their bot to a large degree. There are a lot of far more scary bot entities on the grid than theirs, but by the time you'd find out their purpose it would be because they had already been caught. When it comes to truly horrific scamming though, my bets are on the directly human-controlled avatars... ban teh evil meatspace minds!

So what are the UFBs (Unidentified Flying Bots) doing as they run around the grid? The sheepbot creates enough problems.
