I'm looking for definitions of what a skybox is and what can be done with them. Can anyone shed any light on this?
I am thinking about building and renting apartments/rooms stores in an aerial structure but I would like to this without subdivding the land underneath. Is this possible? I am curious to know whether sky boxes will allow this.

If you can build your apartments or whatever on the ground, you can do the same in the air. If you land supports 15 apartments they can be on the ground or in the air.......equally. You just have to remain within the boundaries of the land you own.......no matter how high or low those apartments are.

A skybox is just a box in the sky, usually used for a little bit (a very little bit) of privacy.
There is no way to subdivide vertically. You could stack these apartments but you'd have to use some other method for determining prim coutns, etc. You'd also be sticking your renters with only one streaming URL, difficulty with banning, etc.

I build my own skyboxes, not for privacy, but because the sky is less laggy.

"skyboxes" are cool, because it gets you away from the land, the trees most of your neighbors on land junk, fog and just about anything else that your video card has to render which decreases FPS (Frames of animation Per Second)
it also does not have to be a box, you could biuld a platform for instance, fence it in and have your house up there
subdivisions and property lines tho are 2d limitations, its a box on some plain, that extends from the lowest point possible in the sim to the highest point so no you cannot have different radio stations at different altitudes (which is kind of a bummer, but even i get alittle brain fried on how to do something like that in 3d)

I am thinking about building and renting apartments/rooms stores in an aerial structure but I would like to this without subdivding the land underneath. Is this possible? I am curious to know whether sky boxes will allow this. Look into the same sort of rental management systems that malls use for renting out vendor stalls, like the Hippo Tech system. They allow a single parcel to rent a specific number of prims allocation to multiple individuals in that parcel. Most systems I have seen have the land deeded to a land group, wher ethe land owner and their alts or trusted friends are group officers, and the tenants have less control within the group. The land is set up so the tenants can build and set landmarks and other necessary stuff, but they can't, for example, terraform or sell the land. You usually need to be wearing that land group's group tag to build or to rez things. A skybox can be anything at all that you can build, to the limits of your available prims. Most rentable skyboxes are very simple boxy structures, using as few prims as possible, and spaced at least 30 M from each other so people in one skybox don't overhear open text chat (or voice chat) in other nearby skyboxes. Personal skyboxes vary a lot. My neighbor has several lovely ones that look from the outside like floating islands of rock with grass and plants and stuff on top - sort of like the 'levistone islands' in some Anime. Pretty cool. I kanow another person whose skybox looks like a huge blimp.
