How many light sources?

Hi,

I have a room with several light sources in it.

I notice that as I walk around the light sources closest to my avatar become active, making the others turn off.

This is a bit annoying, and I was wondering how many local light sources does the viewer render at a time?

Is it possible to raise this number?

Thanks.

Loki.

Six it is, and it cannot be changed.

iirc from the release notes: 6 in-game objects (the 6 closest) may be light sources.

This is a limitation to the OpenGL calls they are using iirc, and there are 2 reserved for the sun/moon - so OpenGL allows 8, 2 of which are used by the world and the other 6 are the closest light sources. I make a set of stage lights (which coincidentally is currently a set of 6) and the interaction can get all messed up if someone has some other SL "facelight" or another SL light source nearby. Still cooler than the CPU killer that used to be local lighting. I still get shudders thinking about it.

I've found the appropriate section of the Second Life Knowledgebase.

"...And Saint Linden raised the Hardware Light Source up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this, Thy Hardware Light Source, that with it, Thou mayest illuminate Thine avatars in glowy Light... in Thy mercy."

"And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu..."

[Whereupon the Liason urged, "skip ahead a bit, brother"]...

"And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou set the Hardware Light Feature of thine Objects."

"Then, shalt thou use count to six. No more, no less. Six shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be six. Seven shalt thou not count, neither count thou five, excepting that thou then proceed to six. Eight is right out."

"Once the number six, being the sixth number, be reached, then shineth thou thy Holy Hardware Lighting Feature of Antioch towards thy avatar, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

Amen.
