Anyone recommend any open join groups that have chat that it worth reading?

Needs to be open join so you can join when you want to read and maybe join in, and quit when you don't want the chat to bug you in any way.

By "chat" do you mean in Group IM?

Most groups that I am a member of discourage the usage of group IM for chat, but rather use it for administartive notices and/or roleplay plot advancement.

I've looked for groups with great IM chat, but alas... nothing yet.

I saw a commercial for an above-ground pool. It was thirty seconds long. You know why? Because that's the maximum amount of time you can depict yourself having fun in an above-ground pool - M.H.

You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later. - M.H.

All I've ever encountered in the way of group chat is someone IMing the group with a friendly "Hi!" followed by a lot of "Left this chat" messages and a reprimand by the group owners. The only exception to this that I've found is the RadioRadio group that sometimes gets chatty during a show announcement, and more infrequently, during a show. It's unusual, but it does happen.

If you find something, let us know!

The question in and of itself is quite subjective, no? What makes for good chat to me may not make for good chat to you. For instance, my family group has a total of 6 members, only four of which ever use the IM. And when we do, it's not about any particular subject of high debate, but instead about individual and family plans for the day, requests for help, questions about purchases, real life issues and such. We don't talk about politics or astro physics.....but it's good chat as far as I'm concerned. :D

Let's see.....One group I'm part of that never holds group discussion in IM, but instead regularly posts events and informs members via IM is SL Public Land Reserve. The regularly hold panels discussing the current status of Second Life and possible future developments.

Perhaps if we knew what type of chat you were interested in we could help a bit better. Are you looking for scientific discussions? Political? In world issues? Upcoming live music events? New and exciting ways to launch water balloons over an extended distance using nothing but a brassiere and a few rubber tubes? :)

I created a group that chat is welcome but there only small group of us and its been pretty quite.
I actually find that most groups in Second Life are bit annoying personally but perhaps its because I am new.
I have joined few but most of them with few exceptions are pretty lame and chatting within im's is discouraged except in the group I started but there is only 4 of us.

Open join groups can be created solely for the purpose of chatting in the group IM.

The Scripters of Second Life is one such group, it has a focus for the chat, scripting; if it bothers you, you can leave the group and rejoin it whenever you want and read it or join in whenever you want. It's not perfect but it works ok.

I assume you know of groups with interesting chat on those topics, since you brought them up, so what are these open join groups which have interesting conversation on science, world issues, live music events, and launching water balloons long distances using nothing but a brassiere and a few rubber tubes? :p

There's no reason I have to provide topics in order for people who have found groups that have chat that they find interesting to tell me about the groups with chat they find interesting. Obviously I am not asking people for groups with chat I am guaranteed to find interesting, I am asking for groups with chat that the respondent finds interesting. Since I specified open join groups, I and others so inclined could join the group and perform our own determination of whether we enjoy reading or chatting in.

I am quite familiar with this pattern. Heh heh.

This is making me think of the Reuter's News HUD, which is an attempt to enable people who want to talk on a subject to get together and do so, but that expects you to get in the same spot in SL to do so.
