workable speed for SL on wireless connection?

I use a cable modem connection that runs SL on my machine usually very well and its advertised speeds are 10,000/256 Kbps. I know in practice that max speeds are almost never reached yet this connection is one I'm happy with.

I am looking at an additional completely wireless service that has advertised speeds of 1024/256 Kbps and so I'm sceptical of that being able to run SL in a useable way and would be interested in folk's thoughts. If it can run it in a useable way it would give me geographical freedom to run sl from almost any location (within the national wireless network)

system - intel solo/nvidea geforce 4 / 1 Gb Ram/ Win XP

Is that the real speed or the 'up to' speed?
I have a DSL connection that is 'up to 1.5M/128k ', but whose REAL speed is 1.0m/100k.
SL runs fine, except in really overly textured areas. My friends with faster connections are clearly able to TP into a new location and see stuff immediately, move around, talk to folks, etc., before I can rez the scene. But if mobility is a consideration for you, SL will work fine.

It's latency, not speed, that's the big problem with gaming over wireless connections. Ie. Higher ping response times. I believe LL officially don't support wifi connections for that reason.

Still - not a problem if you run a wireless home network now that Draft N wifi devices are hitting the market (speed/latency is more on a par with cabled connections) but I've got a feeling wifi ISPs haven't reached this level yet. Draft N is still a bit new, and requires a Draft N wifi card or dongle to utilise the improved speeds/latency.

Running SL is fine on a wireless home network, and thats a with a "B" not G or super G.

national wireless network

Do you mean like Sprint's wireless broadband, EVDO (not home wifi)? I don't know what the advertised speed is, but through DLSReports my local tower gives me about half the speed of other towers, around 5-600 kbps down and 90-100 up. (I've seen over 1,000 kbps at the next tower over.)

SL runs fine (I have bandwidth set to 500, infrequently get packet loss, rarely see the bandwidth meter get yellow anyway). Sometimes it runs better for me across the country than a friend on cable actually on the west coast.

However check the TOS of the carrier closely, some prohibit "online gaming" or have usage limits. Sprint seemed to be the only one that didn't when I checked... ;)

I have noticed in club trivia contests, if everyone knows the answer, those on cable get their's in first, DSL and EVDO seem to be about the same.

hth! :)

Update: So I just finished watching the monthly Rocky Horror event at Rejeanne's, but unfortunately a little over an hour into it, it hiccuped for me. Fortunately it rewound a few minutes OK, which got me back on track with everyone else, but it happened at least a half-dozen more times. :( I don't know if it was due to my ISP, but nobody else had problems.

So I just checked (but with SL minimized), dlsreports just gave me 456 Kb/s down and 118 up
