happened to me in a new way yesterday. using voice client. can't move, red minimap, no text chats, BUT voice fully functional!!! includeing the spatial aspect. I guess they really ARE seperate servers.

Yes that happened to me too - I found it very confusing as it was a while before I realised that I had actually crashed because voice was continuing ok.

It's called a "Stealth Crash".

What the red map means is that your communication with the LL servers has been lost. Something interrupted your communications, and it was not able to re-establish the connection. Re-logging fixes this, and is really the only cure. You'll eventually crash completely.

Sometimes Chat and IM seems to work a bit longer than being able to move or to edit prims or rez items.

What others usually see when this happens to you is that you're stuck in whatever animation you were doing when you crashed. Typing, most often, but sometimes walking or turning in place.

So if you suddenly can't move (but can rotate and camera around); if you suddenly can't select or edit prims;, or if other aspects seem to have frozen; check the mini-map. If it has turned red, you have crashed and must re-log.

Someone spilt strawberry jam on the simulator.

(Ya, the sim crashed, most likely)

Another symptom is you can't get someone's profile (not even your own). You can be editing an object and not realize that you've been cut off. You can't edit a new object, but it lets you play away with editing an existing one, losing all your painstaking edits.
