I am wondering if there are shops in SL where you can pick from a selection of Avatar faces rather than editing individual characteristics. I am also looking for a place to buy normal clothes for a guy (not tank tops or other wierd stuff).

For each body there are two characteristics: Shape and skin. The former usually needs to be bought, the latter may also be customized.
I don't think that you can buy/sell just a face, both in terms of shape or skin. It's always head to toes.
Regarding clothes for men, there is a load of shops there. If you are primarily interested in quality, you may want to visit Blaze.

That's backwards. Skins need to be bought or created outside of SL. They're essentially highly specialized textures that are mapped onto the avatar. Shapes are controlled by sliders. Many people find it easy to design their own shapes using the sliders, but many others prefer to buy them. For men's clothing, I suggest reading http://second-man.com .

Kidd's right, the "face" is composed of two parts. To get a pointy nose or high cheekbones or slanted eyes, the SHAPE needs to change. Like they said, you can do this yourself using 'edit appearance' or by purchasing a premade shape from shape sellers or body sellers. To get better definition (shadows on the nose, around the eyes, decent eyebrows, etc) you need to buy a SKIN. To change your shape and skin, you need to 'wear' different versions. You can never not wear either a skin or shape; you have to wear one of each at all times.
When buying shapes or skins, I would definitely recommend buying a demo for L$0 or L$1 usually. This will give you an idea of how it will look on your avatar. Freebies are available in most of the free areas; I can think of the Shelter, the Free Dove, and the Freebie Warehouse that all have free stuff.
Oh and hair, too, is another item that you can buy. It's an object composed of a bunch of prims that you wear as an 'attachment' to your skull, and you can modify it to fit your head. I've seen some free hairs around but can't remember where.
Re: Men's clothes... I like .::MIA::. (or however many dots there are) for basic stuff that is easily mixed and matched.

There's a store where, for 2700 lindens, you can have your own face scanned and made into a SL face texture. I can't remember the sim, but Phil Linden is in the relevant group.
