You may want to clarify what you mean with "own" and "rent". They're highly debatable terms when it comes to SL .

Well even if you own land you still rent. Tier is just a fancy name for rent, there really is no way to "own" land in SL all you can do is rent. Maybe if one day we can run or own servers then we can own the land...but till then no one in SL owns thier land not even privet island owners...but it makes ya feel better thinking you do it does for me atleast lol

I own my land, to the extent that I paid for it and can resell it at whatever price I can get for it, whenever I please. The only stipulation is that the buyer must agree to the sim covenant and must set up their maintenance fees with the sim owner after purchase.
But whether you have land on the mainland, or like myself have it on a private island, we all just rent it from LL in the lonmg run. Try not paying your tier or maintenance, and you'll see your land repossessed as fast as any landlord would forclose on a renter that is in default.
I consider it "renting" in SL when you pay little or nothing down, and when you decide to leave the land automaticly reverts to the landlord, with no ability for you to sell your interest in that land at a profit. I've done that, as well, but I don't do it any more, for the same reason that in RL I own a home rather than living in an apartment. When I am done here, I can sell it, and have something more to show for my time here than a pile of paid rent recipts.

But they would first pay me to buy the land from me, and I get the profits from that sale.

From: Ike Fairweather tier is not rent. It's property taxes. Since the amount is roughly the same, this is a pointless distinction.

I actually both own and rent, although I marked it "own" since that is my most important personal holding. I own my own small estate on the mainland, rent a house in a Gorean village, and mooch off the kindness of group members and Impulse Island to house my large bi group. So I do all three - own, rent and group land. At one time I had an alt that rented an expensive but totally worth it house in Dublin sim, right across from the Blarney Stone. Talk about the best address ever! I also know people who are "homeless" and live at the hobo camp, or hang out in my place to change, socialize etc. and I encourage my group members to think of our smaller skybox as home. So there should be an entry for nomads too, I think. I always wanted a home of my own because I like knowing I have a little patch of land that I can hyper secure anytime I want to. Though normally I don't. Someday when I finally give up all thoughts of responsible work I'll rezz out the old Airstream RV I picked up free so long ago, hit the road and wander the endlessly growing SL and tell stories to newbies about when I was young.

Incidentally, I don't see the point of this poll. Since there is far more land sold than rented, the result is a foregone conclusion.

By the way, my Partner and three other friends who own no land also call my parcel their home, by my invitation.
One couple has a home perched atop my skybox. They aren't in SL very often, so it doesn't affect my privacy for them to be up there.
There is also one Premium member who counts my private island parcel as his "home", because he never was able to find a mainland parcel worth buying...

I rent one parcel on Ged's Mainland community sim as an experiment, and a place to build something quietly, seperately to the other things I do.
I marked "own" because I (or my land groups) own about 10km2 of mainland, along with named ownership of a sim (though I only really share a 1/4 with Parker for our store).
The difference between "rent" and "tier" is important to me. I'll never make my home somewhere that some other resident gets to tell me what I can and can't do. I put up with griefers and morons with campchair casinos for the freedom.
Govener Linden may be an absentee landlord but she doesn't hassle me either, and she'll be here as long as SL is going, which can't be said for any other landlord.

When I am done here, I can sell it, and have something more to show for my time here than a pile of paid rent recipts. The difference of course is that in RL, looking at the long-term, it's far cheaper to buy than to pay rent across multiple years. In SL on private estates there's really no difference in amount between "rent tier" and "own tier" so anyone renting will end up paying the same as someone owning, except that the "owner" needlessly paid for land and runs a greater risk than the renter.

In SL on private estates there's really no difference in amount between "rent tier" and "own tier" so anyone renting will end up paying the same as someone owning, except that the "owner" needlessly paid for land and runs a greater risk than the renter. That depends a lot on the sim and the landlord... I rented land in one sim, got 2048 M2 or more, paid nothing down, paid a maintenance fee every month, and when I left, I got nothing back. I shopped around and bought a lovely piece of land in a private sim, and paid about half as much as decidedly inferior mainland parcels of the same size were going for at the time. I pay about the same monthly fee that I did on the earlier rental, and a but less per M2 than mainland tier would be. But when I leave, I can sell this land at the market rate. As with RL real estate, prices for land have increased while I have been there. Parcels half the size of my original parcel are being sold for 2 to 5 times as much per M2 as my original parcel. So if I ever do move on, I'll pocket a hefty profit, that I can re-invest in new land somewhere else.

I consider my land owned. I can do what I want with it, sell it to whomever I want, etc. Since it is my first 512 I don't pay tier. And not to be picky, but a POLL is what you vote on. A POLE is something you dance around. Or someone from Poland.
