thing is that "Lag" isn't a simple figure to interpret, it is the sum of different quirks:
client side lag: -Low Frames per second (how many times your display is refreshed, depend of your computer's specs, ram, cpu, gpu..., most peoples find values over 25-30 fps enjoyable, anything under can makes visual hiccups.)
-High ping (how fast is the "pipe" between you and the simulator, low value = fast response, depend a lot of where you are located in the world, and the quality of service of your ISP)
-Packet losses (indicate a bad/broken link between you and the simulator, it means the connection is getting micro cuts, too loaded computer can cause this aswell as crappy isp, and a dieing network adapter).
server side lag: -simulator fps (how many times the simulator refresh it's world simulation per second, 45 is normal)
-simulator time dilation (at what speed the simulator is running, 1.0 = normal speed, .5 = half speed, 0.0 = ... erm...)
-simulator physical fps (how many times per seconds the physical model is refreshed, 45 fps is normal, anything below 20 can indicate a problem).
it isn't easy to sum clearly if it "lag" or not, as some of these factors are affecting each others

If you go into the View tab and select Statistics Bar, you will see all or most of the information Kyrah described.

In addition to the server side lags mentioned above, add server script processing lag. This is due to having too many inefficient scripts.
Script lag is easier to separate than the others. When you only have script lag, movement is fine, display is smooth, but when you use a script (e.g., touch an object), it doesn't react quickly.
Even with script lag, there are different kinds due to different issues.
Also, some scripts will lag even when the sim is running nice and fast, due to poor design.

I use a simpler system , if you want to scream and you click the log out button - The lag has become excessive.
If the lags really bad you wont even log out fast ;p

If the lags really bad you wont even log out fast ;p *nods* And if it's bad enough that your client gives up the ghost, it will be a few minutes before the region will realize that you've left the building... Up to 10 minutes one time it happened to me. Colette's system is the one I use. Oddly enough, when it hits that point, the grid is about to be closed anyways!

Interesting !!

FPS is about 13 on one side and 9 on the other. In the air it gets to about 33 ??
Look, do you know if anyone, Lindens, offer an assessment service to land owners ? Looking for dodgy script, bad build etc.
I would gladly pay to get a report to submit to Lindens. This is a buisness oppertunity Guy's !!

Is there a view, key combo, that I can turn on that shows listening scripts or other items causing lag ?
I suspect a fireplace but would like to confirm

Sim owners have such a tool (list scripts ordered by CPU time taken). Unfortunately, there's not one for mere parcel owners. This is too bad: there would be more pressure on script writers to be efficient, if the typical customer could see which scripts hog the resources.

In the Debug menu (I think), there is an option for View Beacons.
This will give you a visual representation whenever a script fires. Blue is good, red is bad. It ought to help you track down your most obvious script bottlenecks.

This will give you a visual representation whenever a script fires. Blue is good, red is bad. It ought to help you track down your most obvious script bottlenecks. Are you sure that is correct? All scripted objects appear to be red. It's the particle beacons that are blue. Just curious.

Just curious. He meant "Show Updates", which isn't correct for assessing burden on the server, in general anyway. Show updates is more about network traffic, imho. I have a few sim performance gadgets available, which go beyond the normal simFPS/Time Dilation polling -- they gauge sim performance/efficiency. Do a search for "Scrubbie". However, in a Public sim you cannot find out what scripts are hogging resources (as pointed out by someone a few posts back). Private sim owners do have the tool(s) to help them track down inefficient scripts. Public sims are still wide open to allowing anyone to totally drag the sim to its knees (this is possible with just one extremely inefficiently coded script).

The viewer should have a meter that reports - How well is the sim keeping up?
- How well is the client/viewer keeping up?
- How good is the network connection?
If a sim is sick, the users would go elsewhere. If their viewer is slow, they can get a better graphics card. If it is a congested network or ISP, they can blame them instead of Linden Lab.
