On my local TV news, at the end just before the national network news began, one of the anchors said (loosely quoting), "a virtual world now has new owners, Second Life has just been sold." And that was it. Anyone hear anything about that?

I just did a google search and found that "Second411" was sold. Maybe that's what you heard?

Maybe that's what the local news anchor heard. But I definitely hear HER say Second Life.

You probably misheard.

I doubt news like that would be on a local news channel before it got leaked elsewhere or even put out through one of the large news outlets like CNN, Reuters or AP. Reuters would know about it and probably run with it since they've got a presence here.

Also, if even one SL blog got a leak on something like this, it'd spread like wildfire among the others before a local news channel would even have a chance to research what this thing called "Second Life" is. :)

I didn't mishear, but I'm thinking she simply jumped the gun with a rumor.

I heard that it went up for sale and someone swooped in a bought it before anyone else could.

Either that or Anshe bought it and we're all going to get kicked out.

I emailed them; I'm not about to make a toll call over it. I just watched their 11 PM broadcast and there was no mention of it at all, so it doesn't look true.

The first thing I did when I heard it was check the SL Blog, then the forums. I haven't logged in for weeks and didn't know but it could be old news and common knowledge, so I thought I'd ask right here. I honestly wasn't intending to start a rumor (there are better ways doing it if that was my intention).

In one word: Sony
01-25-2007 20:45
It would be really inappropriate of me to comment, if for instance I was speaking from knowledge I may have gained from access to high-ranking corporate officials who talk too much when the drink. That would not be a good thing.

But if I were to speculate, just based on my best guess as to who had enough money...well, surely Sony, or, more accurately, a subsidiary of the same created expressly do deal with online gaming. Just a guess, really.

Hmm

I would have thought it would be more efficient if Linden Labs went down the IPO route via the LSE myself, certainly from the viewpoint of the hedge funds that own a slice of equity and/or debt but that's just idle musing, not hard information.

If sony were to buy it, you can guarantee it will be turned into a money grinder for them. They'll try to squeeze every last penny out of every user possible. I'm speaking from experience as a former long-term EQ player.... lol

I think this is the misconception that's going around..

http://money.cnn.com/2007/01/07/technology/secondlife.fortune/

"While this initial step will open up what is essentially the user's window into Second Life for modification, it will leave Linden Lab in control of the proprietary software code for all Second Life's backend services - the server software that makes the world exist."

I'm hoping Linden Labs will stick to SL longterm, hopefully they won't get sold off to some corporate interests that just want to soak people for money. I think that would kill SL really fast. I like the system they have now, you don't feel obligated to pay.

Sony would release expansion after expansion, tuning them so that if you weren't buying the new expansions all the time, you would fall behind in Everquest. It became obvious they did this, increasing Experience modifiers for the new expansion and scaling them back over time for the older ones.

I didn't mind so much them linking new features to expansions, but the rest was kind of shadey, they REALLY leveraged players into that, and I think it will be the last online product I'll buy from them again. I don't like being PUSHED into buying stuff to keep a game/sim fun. Given a choice - well heck, I bought a few Lindens last night.... lol

Maybe it's a matter of perception

How funny is this??? More to the point how true it would be if she did!

This just in:

After acquiring Second Life for an estimated 27 trillion (L$), Anshe Chung has announced she has a bridge she'd like to sell all of you in Ahern.

Well, not really "sell"...
