Skybox overhang into neighboring land

Hi all. I'm renting a small plot of land over which I have erected a 10x30 skybox/platform at about 200m (got to love living right in the clouds). I have a freebie house and a bit of garden on the platform, but I'm looking for a more interesting house. I have spotted one that is 20x20. Now if I use such a structure it's going to overlap by a couple of meters into neighboring land on either side. being at that height it obviously won't physically affect the neighbors (none of them have anything at that height) but will it use up prims on their land if the linked object is centered on my land?

As a bit of a side question, how would I determine just by inspection how many prims a structure takes up?

Thanks,
Flint

You may actually get the overhanging prims auto-returned, so I wouldn't recommend it.

it's not about affect neighbor sight, it's about prims. The objects that will be onto the neighbor area will use his prims, and he as owner of his land, can return them to you and you'd lose a part of your house.
He might even set his land so you can't create objects, in which case you won't be able to rezz your house.
If he/she has some free prims she will not use, you may ask if they allow you to use a part of their "sky" and use some of their prims, but remember that at any moment they can return them to you.
I suggest to get a bigger plot to rezz a bigger house ;)

Thanks :)
On further thought, my landlord lives next door with a largely empty parcel neighboring me, so I might just get lucky and be able to organize a bit of prim overhang.

As long as the prime object of the linked set is on your land, the structure won't use up any prims on the neighbouring plot - just yours. If your neighbour is OK with you erecting the overhanging skyhouse (which, incidentally, in this case he happens to be ;)), go ahead.

As for counting prims, that's easy if the structure is linked: This is listed on the edit panel. If it's a loose set of unlinked objects, I only know the hard way.

Thanks, and continuing along that line, how is the 'primary' linked object determined? In this case I'm obviously talking about a prebuilt house, so I wouldn't have control over any of the build details (it's non-mod).

If you select the structure, the root prim is the one outlined in yellow. The linked prims are all marked in blue. As long as the centre of the yellow thing is over your ground, you are safe.

Just be careful with whatever you place within the overhanging part: While the house itself is safe from auto-return, smaller objects which happen to be located in the neighbouring parcel aren't. The sim server will kick them back to your inventory without mercy when the time is up.

And yes, all this land permission stuff IS horribly complex ...

I'm curious as to what type of skyhouse you have. If you have one of those types that have the rounded sides, then you may not be overhanging your neighbors property at all.

You said that you are only hanging over a couple of meters on each side...those rounded sides are most likely made from 10 meter diameter tubes so the center of those prims will be 5 meters in.

Erect 4 posts...one in each corner of your property and then send them up to the altitude of your skybox. Use these to determine how far you overhang.

Actually that's exactly what I have, one of the "Pie in the sky" super low prim sky homes with rounded parts. As it turns out it extends about two meters into my neighbors' property on either side, and doesn't affect the prim count on their land at all :) It's actually a surprisingly spacious solution as well.

Thanks for the tip on the smaller objects Ricky, that's an easy one to forget-but as you said in this case the objects will simply be auto returned.

Yeah, I don't plan to anyway, I wouldn't want to mess with the view ;)

I actually had a mishap with the house yesterday. I had a friend over who gave me a copy of something she had just finished building. I rezzed it to have a look, and then right-clicked and deleted.. a little too hastily. It turns out I had clicked on the wall behind it and deleted the house. I could obviously get it from trash (and it's copy) so no big loss.. but I was standing on the floor, so I had a rather unpleasant 200m fall. My guest was left sitting on one of my chairs in the clouds =D

I just wanted to add that one other fun affect is that if you ban someone from your parcel they can still stand on the overhanging part and taunt you. Especially annoying if some of that overhang is *inside* your home.

That could suck. Hopefully it won't come to that..
