Ok I'm brand new to this and just signed up, I'm just curious how to create an avatar that properly represents me. I'm in a wheelchair due to an SCI and I wanted to create an avatar that is like me. So I logged in and I can adjust the usual appearance items but there is nothing for selecting someone with a disability.

I found my way to this through a website where the columnist mentioned you could create disabled avatars. So I'm just curious how do I do that?

Hi eX, and welcome to SL! :D

I've seen someone in a wheelchair. I believe you would purchase a wheelchair -- or maybe someone's made a free one -- and use it much as one would use a vehicle.

To find a wheelchair, I would start by searching SL Exchange:

http://slexchange.com/

You can also search the classifieds in-world, but I find the results on SLX to be far more useful.

Once you've identified a seller of a model you like, you can search for them in-world, then check their profile for their picks or classifieds, where they will usually list their store's location. (Nice run-on sentence, Ava!)

IM me for help if this was confusing. :)

There is no default way in the character creator to make someone in a wheelchair, but there are wheelchair objects that you can purchase and wear. Just do a search for wheelchairs in the products section of the built in search engine.

I have seen avatars in wheelchairs before, and it can be done. It's a matter of finding or building a wheelchair you like, and fiddling with the appearance editor.

I just sent you an informational notecard from a place that makes wheelchairs, and even offers a simple one for free. Let us know how it works out! :)

eX - You might be interested in the upcoming (August) event sponsored by Ask Patty that uses inworld motor races to highlight a real life group that promotes real life racing for those with SCI.

I can vouch for the Ask Patty crew as a dedicated and groovy group, and I'm sure they'd be thrilled if you'd like to participate.

If you want to learn more go to Ask Patty in Ride (part of Motorati) or contact me inworld.

Thanks for the help, and Ava thanks for the IM.

This is one confusing sim.

It can be really confusing while starting out, but it's a great place. The thing to remember is, Linden Labs has given us the basic world and basic tools. Everything else has been/is created by the rest of us. So there's a lot of flexability there.
