The First Look Viewer is a test version of the Second Life viewer. This viewer connects to the main grid, so that you can test it in your everyday Second Life. This is a test viewer connecting to the live grid which means everything you do is for real. We want you to use this test viewer for your normal day-to-day activities, but please be aware that it might be buggier than normal.

FirstLook is the generation of the SL Client as it passes out of internal QA, and is our opportunity to help Linden Lab sort out bugs and final feature sets, prior to it being merged into the general release codebase. Think of it is a "Release Candidate" stage of the viewer development.

Interestingly a friend of mine in RL is new to SL and asked the same question.

A "Viewer" is the program you download and use to connect to Second Life

More acronyms.
SL = Second Life
RL = Real life
LL = Linden labs. (The company that runs Second life)

The 'veiwer' is Client side rendering software. Think of it as IE or Firefox (browser). What is sent to you over the internet is 'viewed' on that type of software, it incorporates such things as a graphics, movie, music, scripting, rendering programmes.

It is legitimate. I have been reading threads about viewers forever and have no idea what they are...not very technically minded and LL never explains their technical terms.

"viewer" is Linden Labs' high-tech, media glitz, PR 'buzzword' for "that program on yer computer". It distinguishes "Second Life" (the program) from "Second Life" (the service).

Frankly, your confusion is understandable, as Linden Labs likes to give new meanings to existing words. Words they've re-defined that I can recall are... "viewer", "grid", "landmark", rez (resolution)", "own (land)", "sim", "ageplay", "agent"... and I'm sure there are more.

I can't get first look to run at all. So does this mean I'm in trouble, if I heard someone say they are going to MAKE us use it?

I have no trouble with the new downloaded version excpet a few bugs..........but when I hit the firstlook Icon.......NOTHING, doens't even try to load up......
