Although we all get annoyed by what some people do with 16m ad lots, or what others do to sabotage them, today I have witnessed the worst case I've seen of one particular phenomenon that I think should be controlled. What I mean is the use of multiple rotating ads, all the same, advertising a REAL WORLD service. The same massed rotators were being deployed on several ad farms where I have my 64m stalls (which, incidentally, just have small, descreet but admittedly orange signs) Ironically the commonest ads on ad farms seem to be 'for sale' rotators referring to the plots beneath, but the growing phenomenon of turning parts of SL into giant ad spaces for RL services is going too far.

*takes a guess* Large spinning yellow adult DVD rental ads and large spinning blue casino ads?
By far the worst ad I ever came across was a pornographic ad for "senior citizen sex" that Lindens apparantly didn't find broadly offensive enough to remove.

Age play hasn't been defined further than "kids" at this point. It may come to it. May-December play will be banned next! Oh Noes!!!onetyone. Sorry, my loltese isn't all it's cracked up to be.A

I think the spinning for sale signs are more intrusive than any of the advertisers using those spaces. Viewing an entire road of spinning prims can be nauseating. I wonder how many seizures those cause.

Interesting...yes...blocking or sabotaging 16m ads. I have a belief, and some may not agree. If someone wants to "spam" the beauty of the environment with an uninspired, thoughtless ad, then I say it's OK to be creative and partner up to block it out. If you want to advertise, get a larger plot of land, and show some creativity in your marketing and ad placement...then I won't complain. But tossing up a large flexy penis ad on a 16m plot which sits nestled between two beautifully constructed buildings...deserves whatever comes to it. Humbug! Humbug I tell you! I love you all~ I'm really a nice guy I swear.

I got hold of a copyable large prim pine tree that may be helpful in blocking, if you're interested IM me. And I do mean large.. it will use up a fourth of a 512 just for its footprint, but you won't be worrying about what's on the other side of it either. It is made of 3 large prims.

Why are ad farms worse if they advertise RL products and services? And what is offensive about senior citizen sex?

It's worse to have blitz/overload advertising of RL things than SL because it is merely 'using' SL without entering into the spirit. What would happen if the owner of a rival 'world', e.g. Sony Home, started putting hundreds of ads in SL?

Both sorts of ad farms look ugly, and the owner of an ad farm advertising SL products is only around for the quick buck too.

From: Aleister Montgomery Why are ad farms worse if they advertise RL products and services? And what is offensive about senior citizen sex? Any ad farm is a blight - no matter what they advertise. If the ad content registers with me because it's something I might be in the market for, I only note it so that I WON'T buy that particular one. RL/SL advertising is just an extension of the extensionist/immersionist thing. Senior sex is 'offensive' because whether teen-aged or middle-aged, most people have a knee-jerk bad reaction to the thought of their parents having sex. To me, an ad for an SL sofa is just as offensive as an ad for RL senior sex. It's offensive because of the ad, and not because of the ad content. My opinion of ad plots is the same as my opinion of email spam. No matter what the content, they are intrusive and unwelcome.

They would have to pay tier to LL for the all the land they put their ads on. And tier is of course a great source of happiness. Apart from that, as mentioned above, sizeable trees are great for hiding those hideous rotating banners on 16 sqm parcels in.

From: Aleister Montgomery And what is offensive about senior citizen sex? The fact that it's a fully illustrated ad on a 10x10 prim. If you don't find it offensive I have some good mainland for sale with a non-offensive view .

Lindens finally cleaned up the large penises next to my property, but took a couple of weeks. I hope to be having geriatric sex when the time comes too, but certainly don't need any previews. ROFL!!! Good Luck!!

boycott add farm business's
07-11-2007 08:25
Lets face it , they are business people , although very poor ones, hit then in the pocket book. Never touch an add farm or do business with anyone listed on an add farm. IM them often and complain every few days . Cover them up using any means at your disposal. Email RL business , they may be unaware of the lousy image their company is creating.(you may want a Hotmail account just for this purpose) Spread the word, try to get as many people involved as possible so these "business's" get more negative replies than positive. Duplicate the signs , place them as close as you can to the offending ad, add a alternate TP , or Link to a religious site. Please post any actions that have gotten you positive results.

Ad farms will die and go away eventually. They don't work. No one looks at them, and if people do it's to see "What A-hole cut up a nice property"

In my opinion, if an ad farm exists, it's gone too far.

JIRA proposal to limit all further land divisions to 256 m minimum. i.e. No parcel could be broken down to 16 m... a lot of discussion on this one... https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-246

Its one thing to limit the SALE of a parcel less than a set amount of square meters, but to limit how a landowner can cut their land is hairy business. It also brings up the problem if someone needs to cut off a 32m or a 16m plot for a neighbor, a rule would need to have one be allowed to sell off a small portion especially if the neighbor owns land in the sim.
