I don't know. I have seen winamp's shoutcast, which allows you to use your home pc. I don't know what's good if you don't want to broadcast directly from your main pc. But regarding "free", the RIAA might want to have a word with you.

There is a handy page here on streaming music in second life, including steps for setting up winamp + shoutcast plugin and several other programs.

Warda The RIAA dosent control software... and just a fact DJing here in game or playing on your land is like streaming at hor home to a group of friends. its fair use. max listeners 40 on a sim and well 100 on most server relays, unless your gona fork over hundreds of USD a month. now if your running a server with 5000 active listeners as a radio station, you would have to pay fees (if and only in the US, I have no clue on other countries).
you are not "giving the music away, and unless some one is gona rip from SL that low of a bit rate its not the same as P2P want info on the RIAA and the crap they feed you? Start here www.boycottriaa.com want some good independent FREE music to stream IM me in world. I use winamp and shoutcast to DJ and Play Live Shows in SL if your on a mac nicecast is what you need. these are neither true DJ programs but are free... if you want something like SAM broadcaster or something that allows you to have 2 sets to mix then you'll have to pay _____________________

I know the riaa doesn't regulate softwre, but they are actively trying to introduce new changes in the rules that would make even the current style of usage within SL either pay huge fees or break the law and be open to lawsuits.

As someone who is completely unwilling to risk the 750 dollar per performance fine (and per performance is one song streamed to one listener), I'm not willing to risk it. Thanks, but I'll stick with the licensing route. And it's only hundreds a month if you over do it. Under the current rates (and that's current rates in effect, not the purposed rates), a single DJ can broadcast to 40 listeners (constant) for around 18 hours per week--including statutory and ephemeral copy licenses and still come in under the $500 per year minimum license fee. If you need further help, or have any questions, I would be happy to help you, Jeff. Im me anytime in game. Hi everyone! I have been in SL for a little bit more than couple of weeks and SL seems to offer multiple opportunities to explore, test, build and learn. Ok i have done some basic things toilet seat, beach hut, small swimming poind and unthentic finnish sauna which is still missing working stove with steam ( i hope to find or learn how to write good steam particle script soon) so i can get steam in to my sauna. Anyway i would like to have party for my SL friends and neighbours and i was thinkin about setting up own Shoutcast streaming server and also i would like to do some speaking over the stream (i think thats possible with the plugins) Good thing is that i have two extra computers lying around what i can use as a server and 24 Megabite / 3Mebagite DSL line which i think should work fine for 15 to 20 people party if everyone is listening. What is normally used bandwith for audio streams? With 56kbits i could get up to 40 listeners (40 x 56kbits = 2240 kbits) and i could still have reasonable amount of bandwith? Is 128 kbits any better that you can justify its use? Or do i have missunderstood steaming totally wrong ![]() I am more than happy to get help since i guess some questiosn will arise how to set up things. Well today SL maintenance and new version setup will give some time to set up my shoutcast server+plugins. Regards Petteri PS I am normally in SL during european timezone. |

Yes your calculation is correct so you should be able to handle around 20 listeners at 56kbit/s. on the 3mbit line.
So just need to setup winamp + shoutcast plugin. As you would be streaming from your own computer would also need to setup the shoutcast server on your computer and then set your firewall to allow people to connect on the port you setup and then set your external ip address and the chosen port on the land in SL. If you needed any more listeners or better quality, would suggest renting an external shoutcast server. But fun to try out whilst SL is out of action during the update. Well i got Shoutcast server working and i could listen it through Winamp using network inside IP address (I have NAT in use) I could also get my server visible to Shoutcast page and its status (up&running)
However when i tried to enter my server address to streaming scirpt i have in use in my parcel (its now group owned parcel and i am one of the group owners) i could not get any music to SL (other stations worked fine) I entered my statation to station list Petteri Station = http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8000 Does anyone has ideas what it the problem? I could also do some speaking to shoutcast (since this is DJ program) so that i switch from Winamp Shoutcast plugin mixer input device from winamp to soundcard. Is it possible to mix two streams so that you speak over music? |

Hi,
Sounds like you need to set your firewall to forward traffic on port 8000 to your computers internal ip address. Then in SL you need your connections external ip address, which you can find my going somewhere like http://whatsmyipaddress.com Jamie Steaming Live Audio - Shoutcast / IceCast Hosting HQ (Bisque 245,155) |

Then in SL you need your connections external ip address, which you can find my going somewhere like http://whatsmyipaddress.com Jamie Steaming Live Audio - Shoutcast / IceCast Hosting HQ (Bisque 245,155) Well actually i realised it today. As some may know ADSL routers have that kind of nice feature that you cant connect to a computer which is in your own LAN (like 10.0.0.10) through internet insted you have to use your own network address. In my case streaming in my parcel started to work naturally when i entered 10.0.0.120:8000 (which i also used when connecting with Winamp) Easy... For mixing i think if you hook up audio mixer to soundcard line-in and use mixer line in and maybe another computer as a source of music (or any other thing) you can mix anyway you like and Shoutcast streams everything out! Hmm i think that actually wont work with other people beside me. I mean nobody else can hear music in my parcel since they cant connect 10.0.0.120:8000. |

Yes so you need to find out your external ip address which your adsl connection uses. The whatsmyipaddress.com should tell you (for example 212.23.2.21)
Then your firewall needs to be configured to forward traffic on port 8000 to your internal ip address so in your example 10.0.0.120. Then in SL you need to the external ip address your adsl connection uses so in sl.. (from the example ip above would look like http://212.23.2.21:8000) If you are still stuck just IM me inworld.
