Ban lists and people still showing up on land...

I live on a private sim. We have some people who we've banned. I have an object that records people who show up on the land. Some people on the ban list still show up on our land watcher. When does the ban kick in? On landing or should it just keep them from tp'ing in?

Thanks.

If it is an estate ban, I believe there is a server side bug wherin they can sneak in before the server says 'hey, you can't come here'. I don't think it's been patched yet, and there's no way for a client to purposefully take advantage of the bug that I know of.

If it is a parcel ban, they can simply tp in over the banlines, as they don't extend indefinately. (4,000m for a named ban I think?)

Wow, I sure don't sounds sure of myself *laugh*

My script that keeps track of visitors only looks out about 50 meters.

Random tips:

When Estate banning, don't ever click the "all estates you manage" button. This is partially broken.

If you ban someone from a parcel, they can not teleport into the region over that parcel regardless of height.

Sometimes scanners pick up agents in adjacent regions, it could be your visitor script is picking them up in a sim next door due to this strange bug.

Also, sometimes estate bans just plain fail. In this case, remove them from the ban list, then re-add them.

Also, try kicking them out of the sim first, then ban them after.

Picture profile viewers will list an avatar in an adjoining parcel even if they haven't visited the parcel with the viewer.

Parcel bans stop somewhere between 100-200 if not named.

Named? Didn't realize that was different. Going to have to ban one of my alts and test this out. :)

Sometimes its fun to fly over and under people who have banlines going at ground, even though their build is entirely in the sky.
- After a bit of that I managed to get one neighbor to remove his banlines (I was friendlier than this post sounds - I started asking why he had them, then told him they weren't achieving what he wanting, then I flew all around him to show him, and finally told him how he could set something up to keep people out of the part of his land he had actually wanted to protect). Come to think of it, I've done that with at least two neighbors.

Your smart money is always on a security orb. I prefer the Hippo system as it is copyable (works like a lot of SL radios do - there is one object you deed to the group, and another that can be copied that you do not deed - you only need to rez the deeded object once per sim, even your parcels are not connected).

Put in a security orb, and use the blacklist to instant TP out named people, but leave it open to the public. That's much more effective than Linden's banline system.
- I did this in my cafe to one of my alts just to test it, and yes, not even a confirmation box. Because she was blacklisted, she was instantly booted everytime. She'd only see a note on why once she arrived home. At the same time, anyone else could TP in, hang out, and so on - and never know the orb was even there.

In my home I use general security - anyone not in the whitelist gets a warning, and if they don't TP out, my orb TPs them home.

Today ona sim I help manage I had a newbie harassing one of the residents. I went to eject the person and the eject and freeze pie options were not there for that one person. Had them for others in the area. Any ideas why?

I had a weapon--Some sort of turret that came out of some hud or other that I had at the time.

Apparently, it was set to kick anyone who wasn't in the same group. When I tp'd elsewhere, changed my group, relogged later and tried to go back, I had no idea why I had no idea why I was being ejected from my own land--across a whole sim.

I had to make a concierge call and get Spike to help me get home again.

Bans are not even as effective as some above have claimed.

A general ban line effect, stating that you must be on an approved list or in a specific group to access the parcel is only effective to 50 M above the terrain surface. Anyone at all can still fly above that parcel at 51M above the surface, and can access anything else in the parcel's airspace.

A "ban by name", where the parcel owner or sim owner bans a specific individual, is only effective to 768 Meters altitude, a limit that was never changed when the build height limits increased from 768 to 4096 Meters.

A sim-wide ban (Estate ban) should prevent someone from teleporting into an isolated sim, but does not prevent someone entering a neighboring sim where they are not banned.
