There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

go there and try it out ...

basicly tho its based off of vrml and eventho its been upgraded many times most will find its graphics and play abit primitive against SL (altho i think they have a better texture engine)

you cant really biuld much, no user made animations scripts or sounds what you can biuld is done in vrml so you will need to learn a huge api and as far as i know you cant really put it in the world (tho i could be wrong)

its more or less just a chatroom with amusement park quality's

In my humble opinion, Active Worlds doesn't hold a candle to SL. Don't bother downloading it.

AW was, in many ways, a progenitor of SL. It had some ability for user created content, in a basically empty world created by the populous. But make no mistake, it's a progenitor, not a contemporary. I was playing Active Worlds back when Gateway still went by the name "Gateway 2000", while I was playing Quake 1. Its been updated a heck of a lot along the way, but it shows its age. Heavily.
