Your Social Security Card

I got curious, after hearing about Linden Lab's identity/age verification scheme, so I dug out my USA Official Social Security Card and guess what it says on it? Let me quote..."FOR SOCIAL SECURITY AND TAX PURPOSES - NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION". To me that seems pretty clear but I guess some money grubbing companies ignore the fine print.

I am sure that non-USA citizens have documents that state something similar so my question is how can Linden Labs and their new buddy, Integrity, dare to ask us for this? It may not be illegal but it certainly is unethical.

I also brought up the USA Social Security website which was peppered with warnings about giving out Social Security numbers to a business that doesn't need it.

We are being asked to provide our Social Security numbers to a private company that is known to sell information to anyone who can pay the price just to be labeled as an official porn user in Second Life.

Even on my worst day I am not dumb enough to fall for this one.

Agreed.

When SS was "invented" it was under the promise that it would NEVER be used as an identification device. Of course, it almost immediately WAS used as one.

Still...I request that my Driver's License NOT have my SS# on it (some states put the numbers on there) and refuse to supply the number to every private company I can possibly refuse it to. When I apply for jobs (I'm now a business owner though, so no more of that), I actually gave other identification...not my SS#.

It is just one more way for people to make more money... I think that is all it has to do with but I am sure if they pressure people to give out more information then what they are already asking for i.e credit card like the social security card their business will crumble before their eyes.
