I live in a skyhouse above 500m. when I try to fly while in my garden I sink back to the ground. So I thought: Ok..that's because of the height, but to my surprise my fiance and my sister can! As do several other friends of mine. How is this possible? I there someting I'm missing?

You need to buy/script a powered flight device.
Avatars are limited by a natural flight ceiling of around 200 odd meters from ground level in any sim. Although it is possible to TP to a higher level, once there to fly you need additional assistance.
Powered flight devices include both jet packs and wings, both of which you need to attach to your virtual self.
Without such a device you can skim the ground level only above your height ceiling when you push the flight command, and if you fall off the prim platform you will fall to the ground. If you are in a damage enabled area you can virtually kill your avatar on ground impact
Finally some land is set (via the owner/Estate manager) to not allow avatars to rez/bring in prims. In that case your flight devices will not rez/attach
