I'm not at my home SL machine at the mo but does anyone know where I can turn off the above on the latest version? There certainly isn't a tick box in Preferences/General.
Regards.

Visit the "My Account" page on secondlife.com, there's a link to "Email settings" where you can turn off notification.

don't get me wrong Morwen, SL is up and running within minutes of my getting home but since all IM's come up in-game anyway it just doesn't seem in my case much point having my email client tell me too :)

Ah I see.... For me it is nice to see when I am doing my work that people think of me... And as my working days can be very long that is sweet (I am a business woman and I have to travel although the The Netherlands for my work... so long driving times... long live wireless internet :P )

What I mostly like about email notifications of IMs is that I can also respond to them via email. If I couldn't respond, then I probably wouldn't want the IMs emailed to me.

Ah yes, that would be very nice... but I see here the danger of getting spam and alike into SL. That would be awefull.

Oh, there's probably some provision in the ToS that gets people into trouble for attempting to use SL IMs as spam.

Besides, there's not much space in one IM, so anything that has to be said has to be said succinctly.

Would be worrying more about notecard spam if I was you. :p

Actually, I think s/he means that if you have a virus sending spam from your account without your knowing about it, it could be sending spam email as IMs.
