http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/news/2007/04/vonage_appealWill the outcome of this case have any effect on the Voice Feature coming to Second Life? It has been postponed a few times. Perhaps this is part of the reason. From: someone The case is being closely watched by the internet telephony industry, as opponent Verizon's patents might also affect other voice-over internet protocol, or VOIP, providers' ability to connect their services to the public telephone network. Tuesday's temporary reprieve means the window for dozens of other VOIP carriers remains open, for the time being, while Vonage attempts to disprove Verizon's wide-ranging patent claims.

What could this possibly have to do with Second Life?
The issue isn't use of VOIP systems when going computer-to-computer, it's the method in which Vonage is connecting from VOIP to the POTS (Plain Ol' Telephone Service) grid.

No. The issue in the lawsuit arises when people wish to make phone calls from an internet phone to a normal land-line. The Regional Bell Operating Companies are complaining that Vonage is not paying their fair share of the costs to operate the telephone network. I disagree with the Wired article, I do not believe it will have that much effect on purely peer-to-peer calls, like Skype, Teamspeak etc... in that situation, I am the one paying for the infrastructure, and the call never leaves the `net.
Not that I am looking forward to voice chat...

I haven't reviewed the actual pleadings or the briefs filed inthe appellate court, so I am shooting from the hip here. Based on what the article said, I agree with the previous posters. I don't believe it will have any effect on voice chat in SL.

I can't find the link to it right now (it was a podcast somewhere I think), but one of Philip's plans was/is to tie SL voice to the regular telepohone system, so it might affect that plan of theirs.

Yes I recall that also. I was sure SL was not going to pass up it's international status and not make money from this voice feature. This may have them waiting to see what the outcome is before rolling out voice. I thought we were going to have those capabilities by now. Does anyone have a link to the real release date?

From: bladyblue Bommerang Does anyone have a link to the real release date? http://news.com.com/2100-1043_3-6178864.html (April 24th): From: someone Rosedale said during a keynote speech at Gartner Symposium ITxpo here that he hopes to see voice officially launched in Second Life within the next several months. The buzz on the beta grid was a voice-enabled First Look release for the main grid in three weeks, and then fully integrated a few months later, so that seems to fit. Upcoming in the line of features we're all just dieing to have: From: someone Other plans in the works for Second Life include adding the ability to scan users' photos onto their avatars and bringing more realism into the virtual world through detail-oriented design, such as the way a butterfly flitters across a computer screen, Rosedale said.

It would seem strange that the 'telephone infrastructure providers' are trying to claim yet another layer of costs, when in reality using a connection other than dialup, is an always on connection which you pay a subscription for. It doesnt matter how you use that connection, telephone, internet etc.. its already paid for. Whats even more bizzar in that it is a Telephone Provider in the United States making this claim, when the internet delivers the signal to the local exchange, before conversion, when local calls are free anyway! How many times do these corporates what us to pay for the same thing???

I think the case is about Patent Violation...

...and of course, the SL IP police should be in full support of AT&T who are claiming that their rights have been violated.
