Best way to change standard walk annimation?

I would like to change the basic walk annimation to something more realistic, but there seem to be too many options and different ways to do so.

What is the most simple way to change this? What is the most effective? Are they made which will replace the standard walk without using a HUD or /command line options?

Some seem to say they can be "attached" - to what do they attach? Do I lose an attachment point using one of these?

Are annimations scripted things which will affect sim lag? If so, what are the least damaging methods of doing so?

Are there poorly made ones to stay away from? What do I look for?

And why do I always put my hands on my hips when I stand still? - it just looks too arrogant.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

There are a number of animation overriders (A/O's) available. Some are free, some for sale, and many are built into things, like a sexy walk built into shoes.

The sold ones are usually pre-loaded with good animations. Those with a HUD usually allow more control without typing chat commands.

Most will either attach in a relatively unused spot, like using the pectoral attachment point and locating the prim inside the body, or will work as an HUD. Most that I have seen do use one attachment point somewhere, either on the body or one of the HUD points. I prefer the HUD ones or those built into clothing, like in a shoe prim, since they don't take an otherwise used attachment point.

Abranaimations makes a reasonably priced, easy to use AO.

Any attached prims or scripted things in use will contribute to some degree to lag in the sim. A typical walk/stand animation If it's extremely laggy, I'd rapidly ditch my AO as one of the first things to go.

I use the WET ao. It's a Freebie and looks like a pager, or MP3 player. I loaded up the Walk i wanted, and a Stand Pose i wanted and Attached it to my Upper right arm, then i Moved it so that it rests Inside my Arm, Out of sight.

I've never had a single problem from this one. It's Copy, Mod, and Transfer, so if you want one (Without my Poses, those are Non Transfer) I'll give you one. Contact me In Game. I'll throw in a Multitool as well, it has a Hug, a Kiss, and a short range TP as well. I give those to almost every Newbie i Meet.

I use a Franimation 1.8 AO. It's open source. You can probably find it at Yadni's still.
The walk i use.... If i remember right it's one of Ulrika's creations. I also put 2 different stands in it.

I made different versions of it:
one i placed in a shoe base (rarely use that one though),
another i placed inside my wedding band... convenient because I always wear that.
I also made others for various attachment points so it can be switched out.

Bottom line, if you can, and have mod rights, it is always better to insert the ao into an object that you will already wear and use, rather than waste an attachment point just for the ao.

I'ld like to 2nd Ceera's suggestion of Abranimations. I'll also suggest Lost Dog as another good source for animations, as is Sensual Designs (the animations are down in the basement).

Also, be warned that if you buy an animation to put in your AO, it will likely be "no copy". Folks building their own AO's for the first time frequently run into this... you can't place a no copy into your ao while you are wearing it; you will have to detatch it and rez it.
