This is clearly a hack, too - the damn thing should not be useable outside a touch event.

I hope he's visited soon, and I don't mean by his aunt.

EDIT: I was wrong, it DOES work fine outside a touch event.... but seems it shouldn't...

I suspect you are right. I edited my post to remove the angry profanity, but I see that I have already been quoted. Bummer.

That it does... I will absolutely never ever ever go to a web page from within SL. Given that I feel so strongly about that, wouldn't it make sense that I could completely turn that feature off at the client?

I didn't do it. I don't know who aubreTEC Grey is. No, it wasn't my advertising. Whoever did it was obviously trying to hurt, and not help, my business in SL.

I've been saying this to literally hundreds of people tonight, so forgive if the statement gets shorter and shorter.

I would posit that there are perfectly legitimate uses for it within a listen event as well, as in triggering via dialog menu (such as a "Web Site" button).

There are also some nifty URL "grabber" devices that turn spoken URLs into links... a bit on the laggy side, that listen-to-everybody-on-public-channel thing, but still a legitimate, non-griefing usage.

There are no doubt legit uses in many different events.

My point was, simply, that it was being abused and I was just being all gripey.

Look the worrying thing is how we cant really trust where advertisements and objects are coming from - anybody remember the goo attack and the image came from "Phillip Linden"

and a few weeks ago the vulgar porn spam was from Profoky Neva when its quite obvious she wouldnt do such a thing...

The newest form of griefing others, is to not grief them directly at all. Do things that make it look like them, they have them as owners and/or creators and poof, we blame the wrong person.

If that person has ANY mod prim sales, this can be done. I Won't say how as to not give griefers info, but if you can mod it, it can be done.

I couldn't care less... I think this shows that the Lindens are caught with two thoughts here.

A) To protect all the content creators and consumers from these exploit, which to be honest are coming thick and fast.
B) To minimize the amount of downtime faced by users and maximize the quality of time on the grid.

I don't see why they can't shut off the grid for a weekend every month and take care of issues that are needed to be dealt with. Critical bugs like permissions and virus-like self replication must be sorted ASAP but most of the downtime hits the UK's sociable hours lol.

Anyways as I said I couldn't care less about the downtime, Im off to watch HBO's ROME on DVD......13th!!!!!!

I'm going to take the rather unpopular stance on the side of the Lindens. Grid attacks are incredibly disruptive occurences that require LOTS of attention, from tracking and killing the objects themselves to investigating and eliminating the source to stabilizing server traffic in sims.

Remember that these grid outages are bad for LL's business as well; its in their best interest to fix them as quickly as possible and I have full faith that they're doing so as efficiently as their resources will allow.

If we're going to express anger, it should be towards residents who focus this much time (and, let's face it, talent - as heinous as grid attacks are, they still require a significant amount of work) on ruining the experience for others.
