Before I go messing with stuff I don't really know about..I have a question that some of you may be able to answer...
my PC is pretty fast and can support dual display..3.4Ghz P4..2Gb ram 256Mb ATI Radeon grapics...what I would like to know ( without jumping in the deep end and breaking something ( I know very little about pooters ( I just plug 'em in and they work)))..OK question..can I split my screen up so all my HUD attachments are on one monitor and have an uninterupted view on the other?.Thanks in advance for any information.

Sadly no. The "Floaters" are contained inside the main window.

I have a dual display system as well. I have had limited success with stretching the main window to live on both monitors.. the results didn't suffer the lag I have come to expect from games liek Mechwarrior...

But that places your avatar half on one monitor, half on the other.

Oh how I WISH the inventory, chat and editing tool pallets were ACTUALLY windows floates (like in photoshop).. it would be SOOOO nice to have Monitor A free and clear to just SEE out of, and all the floaties on Monitor B.

I've used a dual monitor setup with both an nVidia and ATI card, and it worked fine so far as not crashing or lagging, but like Winter said, the avatar is at the border in the middle of the screens. Some folks might still find this worthwhile, depending on what sort of things they are doing.

Seems like all the LL programmers would need to do would be to allow us to alter the default location of the avatar, so we could set it to, for example, be one one fourth of the way from the left of the dual monitor display, which would put it in the middle of the leftmost monitor. Might not be as slick as dialogs that could slide out of the SL window, but it would probably be useful to a fair number of people.

I use dual monitors, and I used to use them both for SL quite effectvely. What I would do was stretch the SL window so it covered the entire left screen, and half of the right one. This allowed for the inventory, editor, mini map, and stats bar to be on the right, giving me an unobstructed view on the left. The avatar of course was centered in the window, which put it about 3/4 of the way to the right in the left monitor. It was a great way to do it.

Unfortunately I had to stop doing it that way, as one of the updates about six months ago or so ended up severely nurfing dual monitor performance in SL. My frame rate was cut down to a near standstill. LL says SL does not support dual monitors at all, so I guess I was lucky it worked for as long as it did. I really wish it still worked.

Racal, if you're going to try this, I'd suggest doing it the way I did. Filling both monitors completely will split the avatar down the middle, which looks really weird, as the other 2 posters mentioned. Doing the 1 and a half monitor thing keeps the av whole, and gives you more than enough room to move those floaters out of the way. I only hope you can get better frame rate out of it than I can now.

Greetings,

I am another dual monitor user. I swap between full dual screen spread for more screen real-estate scripting, Chosen Few's One and a Half set up for building, with the inventory open on the half monitor, and just maximised single window mode for the rest of the time, with a brower open the other monitor.

I haven't experienced any speed changes between the different modes, but then again, I'm generally up in my floating workshop while I work.

It's versatile though and you can change your set up in a second. I'd recommend experimenting to find if anything suits you at certain times.
