I would prefer to periodically start new IM conversations with the same person and clear out the previous one.
Is that possible?
Thx in advance

Not sure what you mean or why you would want to do that. Can you explain with an example?

You delete the log or turn off the option to show the end of the last conversation.

I like to start with no previous messages left over, and periodically would like to delete previous conversations as new topics begin.
I'm not sure where the log is kept, and couldn't find the option. Sorry, I'm still getting used to the SL interface. _____________________

On XP, it's under "C:\Documents and Settings\(your windows name)\Application Data\Second Life" . If you have logging enabled, each person that you have an IM session with will have a separate file.
I'm really curious why you'd want to do this. _____________________

Sometimes my kids walk by to see what's up and rather not have them view a previous conversation, and was looking for a way to clear those.

In light of the OP's prior thread I find this question interesting.
----------- As to the mechanics I am not sure it does log conversations automatically theres an option make it do so though. If you log off you can of course clear your cache and you can always delete the directory the cache is in. Its in Documents and files/owner/application data/second life if you are on a PC As for the text on the screen from a conversation you have just been having in your current log on, I am not sure if there is a way to remove that. |

I looked around the menus and didn't see where to enable logging.
Can someone be kind and show me? Thx again _____________________

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things. Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut. |

...my kids... Oh.. The logging options are somewhere in the Preferences. Hit ctrl-p to bring up the prefs window and dig around in the Communications tab. _____________________

I think all you need to do is click that tear off box in the top right hand corner (- X). That will close out the chat session. Handy for all those group IM chats you aren't interested in too.
Then when you want to start a new topic just re IM. |

No, no...don't mess with your IM logs.
Instead, go to Edit/Preferences/Communication and un-check "Include Previous IM in Chat Window", or some such...sorry, I can't log in and check the exact wording. But this is the setting that repeats the end of the last conversation you had with that person. _____________________

Several answers, depending on what you want to do:
1) If you don't want any future chat logging at all, go to Edit->Preferences, Communication tab, and uncheck "Log Instant Messages" and "Log Chat". 2) If you don't want to see the end of the last IM conversation you had with someone, uncheck "Show end of last IM conversation" in the same place. 3) If you want to delete any / all existing chat logs, go to the path shown in the "Change Path" field (should be able to select/copy/paste it) via Windows Explorer or simple folder navigation, and delete the *.txt files you find there. |
