Can wearing too many scripted items crash SL?

I have a reasonably powerful computer that runs Second Life quite well, and up to recently I never had any problems. Last night, however, SL crashed a couple of times, and each time it did so it prompted some kind of blue-screen-of-death crash in my computer (a serious disk error of some kind). Each time, SL crashed, so I restarted it, and after I restarted it to play some more, I got the blue death panel.

I had recently added yet another scripted weapon to my avatar's loadout of gear. I'm quite the gearhead and the av wears multiple weapons (he can't draw them all at once, there are so many) and multiple HUDs for various weapon systems. I got to wondering: is it possible to have so many scripted objects "worn" by your avatar that it causes SL to crash? The items weren't being used actively, just worn in position to BE used.

Any insight would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

I blue-screened three times last night and I was scriptless. It might have to do with yesterday's version (OMG did I just say that? HOW often are updates now?)

This is the whole reason I ONLY download the requiered versions when my SL is working just fine...The only times I have downloaded the optional versions while my SL wasn't messed up for me, it ended up messing it up seriously.

I always run the Freelook Viewer...always. I crash no more or less with the FLV. To answer your question, I don't think having too many scripts will crash SL...but it may. Certain sims have tons of scripts running, and they don't crash me. Other times, I'm in a sim with no scripts, and I crash. Go figure.

BSOD's often mean a hardware error, most commonly Hard drive or RAM.

Ive never had SL give me a BSOD only a couple crashes here and there.

I do not however find any direct correlation between your avatar and a BSOD...

So my blue-screening is likely the result of Second Life itself crashing and messing with my machine -- is that the consensus? I want to make sure I'm not doing anything to contribute to the problem.

Have you tried taking off your latest new scripted item and seeing if you still crash? Granted SL is marvelous at borking (I love that word--learned it in this forum) updates, your BSOD could be a combination of bugs in the viewer and the new toy.

it may not have caused your crashes but wearing that many scripted things does effect sims your in and the people around you if you cant draw all those weapons out at once no sense in wearing all of them and their huds all at once

There is a SIM eater bug in a common function.
07-12-2007 00:28
I found this out the other day playing with some scripts. It would take the SIM I was working on out and crash me out of SL. Even though it's not likely wearing to many scripts would crash SL, it is possible that there is a flaw in your new toy crashing it. I'm guessing it's the new version though. I'm dreading logging in and getting it, every version I've been getting lately crashes me off and on till they get it patched up usually just in time to start over with a new version.

Graphics Card?
07-12-2007 00:51
What graphics card does your PC (assuming it's a PC) use?

I was getting blue screen crashes with 1.17 where my PC went to 600x800 resolution and I had to restart. If it's this sort of error and an Intel card, I may have a suggestion/solution (when I get to work where the PC is ;-)

However, Zalandria's suggestion re the sim-eating function sounds very likely to me since it only started with your new weapon.

/me must remember to post that solution anyway, for other Intel graphics card users....

I think most blue screens are a result of graphic card incompatibility. The blue screen is a symptom of a hardware issue usually cause by incompatability of some kind. If updating drivers doesn't work (and no it doesn't work with several types of nvidia cards I have found out) the solution is a new card. I got lucky there was some kind of special on new generation cards that are basically watered down cards in the 8000 series. I Plugged it in and the problems went away and the card was only 150 bucks or so (err can't remember but it was dirt cheap and I got it directly from nvidia). Anyhow i'm not the first person in sl to have blue screen due to video card issues to just give up and replace the card and I probably wont be the last. Hopefully you will get an error report that will tell you what is causing the problem mine was always "Stuck threads" in the graphics card the drivers were up to date and nothing done fixed the issue and the computer had been inspected cleaned and had no issues. So I took a deep breath and bought a new card when I saw one come up for a good price. Sometimes this is the only solution. Blue screens are never good things though and is a sign of a computer problem (hardware related) of some kind

If there is an issue that needs quick responce I have rather see an new version every day, then they wait a week for a new version.

I know that this may be not very welcome for people with slow connection or with a limit on data.

For me a new update is no issue. Mostly it is downloaded within 5 minutes and I have no download limit.

@OP: I am not a computer expert, but what I have understood of it, a blue screen often refers to a hardware or driver problem, so you problem may not be connected to SL at all.

I have been running Second life since last October, and have never experienced a blue screen crash, until last night after i did the required update.. So obviously I had to restart my computer, then I log back in, as soon as i see myself standing in my house, I crashed to desktop.. This is what I did, and it seems to have cured the problem.. I uninstalled any and all traces of SL off of my computer, no SL folders, at all.. I still had my copy of sl firstlook windlight version, I went ahead and deleted that as well.. I also had some backups in my documents folder which i deleted as well.. I then re-installed the latest version as a brand new install, started up, and didn't have anymore crashes, and I tested it for 2 hours tp'ing anywhere I could think of.. Try that and see if that cures it for you :)

Good luck!!
