Is there a way to turn off the pointing when building or editing objects. I find it extremely annoying but haven't found anyway to turn it off. I know there is a setting for turning off your typing animation but a search hasn't revealed anyway to accomplish this.
I appreciate any help that can be provided.

You can't turn off the pointing, but you can turn off the particle stream that goes from your avatar's hand to the selected object. It's in the Tools menu.

Wear an Animation Overrider if you're not already, and ensure that the stand and any other animations you might be running while editing affect the arms and shoulders and such and are of a sufficiently high priority.
Stands advertised to not show the typing animation will probably work, as the same joints are involved.

I found the best way to avoid all that pointing is just have a seat somewhere while I'm working on something. It makes it a lot easier to cam around objects and not accidentally move my avatar in the process. If you have an AO.......those animations will over-ride the pointing as well.......But, even with the AO, I'll just sit on the ground while I work. It keeps me still so I can concentrate on what I'm editing.

What Milla said. Just rez a chair, and park your av on it, and zoom away from both so you don't have to see it. Denial can work wonders in many situations in fact.

I refer to the pointing as acting like a monkey who has seen his first banana. D11011101

I fire up the Chimera when building. People think I'm nuts.

Funny, I don't normally go for names with numbers run into them but that one is really cool: it looks stylish and has a good rhythm when you take a moment to work it out.

Someone could add a feature that lets you turn it off so others don't see you pointing, but I don't know of anyone who has, yet

Another advantage of sitting on something to build: if you're working in a sandbox, it stops you from being blown up, orbited, run over by some noob's freebie vehicle or otherwise griefed. It still doesn't help when someone rezzes an thousand-prim build of a shopping mall on you and your work, but hey, can't expect a plywood box to do everything.
