Camping isn't good. ???

Ok, now I'm confused. I have searched all over the forums and while there are the scattered believers, the majority of the people hate the practice of camping. They have a variety of good and bad reasons: Lag and overload being the main good ones. What confuses me is that these people say that THERE IS NO GOOD REASON FOR CAMPING. They say NOBODY benefits from camping.

Ok, back up.

Camping is quite obviously a very popular practice. By that, I mean that many of the most popular places in SL employ camping chairs, and you don't have to fly around very long to find one. My question is:

How does a business REALLY benefit from camping?

All I understand is that the traffic rating goes up, so they are higher on the Places search, and they get a few more hits, and hence more exposure. But is that it? Is there something I am missing? Thanks!

Yep. That's the reason.

Don't think you're missing anything Bella. So long as the traffic system exists, businesses will go up in the ratings, and residents will suffer from the lag. Go figure.

I think those that rent out shops can also charge higher rents if they have higher traffic numbers. It's not just newbies that fall for traffic numbers.

camping is old news. now it's a lot more fun to put a bunch of alts inside a cube above the clouds! you'll get about 16K of traffic on a 512sq. m. parcel with about 10 zombies inside a 6 primmed brilliant idea. "your box, your zombination" .. just brilliant.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys! So, is it really worth it to have a few camping chairs? I suppose it depends on the business, so lets say an upcoming store. How beneficial is it to have a camping chair or two? Or would it actually hurt me by draining my Lindens or turning anti-Campers away at first sight? Thanks again!

As you're running an enterprise it makes more sense to do everything you can to keep your expenses down.

To put it in the form of a question: How much money should you give away to the people who aren't going to spend the money in your store anyway as they're just there for the free money? The answer is zero.

Maybe THEY won't spend money on my store, but will they give me enough publicity and exposure to get others here? Right now, though, I'd have to agree with you, it doesn't sound like a smart business move right now.

Get a few alts and log them on at a platform or one of the more atmospheric camping "chairs" and leave them idle 24/7.

Each one gets you 1440 worth of traffic per day, so 5 of them will put you at 7200.

Or you could just not care, but at least alts are better than actual campers.
