Ok aside of the estate tools & finacial differences, are the new mainland sims class 5 like the new island, able to support 100 avatars?
Anyone know if prim limits may be bumped up later, perhaps the new class 5 servers have unused capacity till an update or are all the servers in SL exactly the same size?

All island will support 100 avatars. The bigger difference is in how much the performance degrades to the point where its useless. While a class 5's "breaking point" might be a few more than a class 4's island, realistically, there isnt enough difference to really cheer about. I own both Class 4 and class 5 islands and I can tell you from experience, when lag is crappy all over SL, its still crappy all over.

Mainland sims are restricted to a maximum of 40 avatars as I remember.

LL Locks all mainland sims at 40 avatars.

Prim limits will remain 15,000 prims per sim max. No change on the horizon at all. "Openspaces" sims, intended latgely for placing navigable water around private island sims, have 1/4 the prim and avatar limits of a normal sim (10 avatars, 3,750 prims), as they are running 4 openspaces sims to a single server, and they evenly divide the resources between the 4 sims. LL does place some openspaces sims on the edges of mainland areas, as navigable water.

The Class 5 servers are primarily more energy efficient, and are a little faster than class 4. The capacity limitations for things like prim limits are a limit imposed by the software that powers SL, not the hardware that it runs on.

So if you were to buy an island do you then buy these openspace sims to go with it, because all the island I have seen seem to have the sim wall of death at the edge of the sim. Are they cheaper than a normal island to buy perhaps?

Open space sims are a bit different. You get 4 of them, but they cost the same as a regular sim. Now, with open space, you only get 1875 prims for the entire sim as opposed to the 15,000 you get with the single regular sim. They are not cheaper.

Ah, but 4 sims boating / forest / grass / desert sims for price of 1 is cheaper if you want to attract boating people or golf players etc. Beats buying 4 full price sims just to leave empty :)

Crazy but until I read this I've never thought of going to the edge of a PI sim. What is the wall of death like? LOL

You must already own one or more private islands to purchase any Openspaces sims. They are sold only in sets of four, and must be "anchored" to a sim that you already own. The price and maintenance cost for the batch of 4 is the same as the price and maintenance for one private island. So to make a boating paradise with an island surrounded by 256+ meters of navigable water, you could buy one island and two batches of Openspaces sims, and make a 3x3 grid that has the island in the center, surrounded by the water sims.

I believe three of the sims adjoining the one I live in are done as OpenSpaces sims. Haven't checked to make sure, but they are mostly water with just a few tiny land masses in them. Great for boating!
