Rezz a 10x10x0.2 cube.

Cover with grass texture.

Place on ground.

Copy and reposition prim as needed.

Island owners can change the texture of the land itself, but you can't do that to a mainland parcel.

Does anyone know whether a sim owner can do that before the sim is cut up and sold off in pieces?

So, unless its perfectly flat... I cant do it by rezzing a flat cube and texturing it... Any other ideas?

Mainland ground textures cannot be changed. Period. Primming it is the only way. Private island owners can change the textures of the ground at will.

You asked for other ways...

1. put large flattened spheres down on the ground. looks like rolling hummocks of land. or a mix of flat cubes and spheres... lots of well done sims use this approach.
2. use a particle generator to create particle grass. (search on 'field of dreams' in the script forums for a free version. Also available commercially.) This will make grass or flowers, across a broad swath of land...but its 'particles', not objects.

Theres also a default Linden grass that places small clumps of weedy grass in a random pattern. Lay a few of these down and you'll get a fairly decent looking grassy lawn. I breaks up the flatness of the standard ground texture.

You'll find it in your default inventory.
