Real Freebie only with full perms?

In the german forum someone claims that only freebies that are given out full perms are "real freebies". Complaining about creators limiting rights on their "freebies" and forcing people to get these "non-real freebies" from in their shops.

In my eyes, "freebie" means "given out for free" and says nothing about permissions. A no-copy item that is given out for nothing is not less free then one with full perms. If a brewery gives out free beer it doesn't have to give out the recipe too and to fill the glasses again and again to make it really free beer. What is your opinion on that?

I run a freebie blog. My opinion is that "someone" is wrong. A freebie does NOT have to be given with full perms to be a freebie. Free means free. Free does not mean - free and be free to distribute freely around the free world.

Free is free regardless of the permissions on it.

Not to mention that giving something away with full perms just means that it will land in some BIAB and people trying to profit off your good will.

Freebies cost L$0

Dollarbies cost L$1

No other conditions apply in my opinion. (^_^)y

Free = Free (as in cost)

Free != Full perm

(I spot a new recurring topic!)

Is why I support no-transfer for all freebies where the creator doesn't want the freebie resold.

Otherwise, if he/she wants to give it away for everyone to do whatever they want with (including resell), then use transfer-allowed.

Seems simple to me.

Free=Free=Free

What do the permissions have to do with it?
Even if it is full perm you still paid $0L for it so it is still FREE!

I think that the main problem is that Free != Free (or Free <> Free, if you prefer).
Many non-native English speakers are easily confused by the fact that we use one word to express both gratis(free as in beer) and libre(free as in speech).

My vote: freebie = free as in beer
(but I can understand how a second-language speaker could have formed the wrong opinion)

So, this friend .... I could GIVE them something, something very useful, somethign that other people have paid real money to aquire and have been satisfied with the transaction, and when I give this thing to them I do not expect a single third-of-a-cent or even a "thank you" in return for that item...

and that still isn't good enough?

I normally use a few very uncomplimentary adjectives to describe a person like that.

The word freebie does not say anything about the permission or the way to use it. It only means it is free, it does not cost anything.

I also vote for free beer.

A freebie (or even a dollarbie) is a gift. Gifts can be given with conditions. Gifts seldom come with infinite copies of themselves to be redistributed.

I understand the linguistic difficulties. English-speakers really torture their languages.

The way Americans use the word "love" must drive people nuts.

I'd love to have a free beer.

Methinks a special word to denote a full-perm free item is in order, because it's usefulness in it's own right just for that is indisputable -- it can become a component of something else, or a perfect learning device. When I say 'freebie', I usually only mean that the item is available at zero lindens cost and nothing else.

Mind you, I'd like to have a special word to denote a freebie that is not full permissions but can be transferred, as well, because these make great small gifts to brighten someone's day.

and I just want to add that the freebies people are 'forced' to go to a shop to get are in most cases a lot nicer than the full perm freebies you aren't 'forced' to go to a shop for.
