I have a file I want to upload, but whenever I do SL resizes it, for example, to like 512x512 or 512x256. I want the image to be uploaded properly to whatever size it is naturally, and then I want to be able to make a poster of it. Can someone help me out?

It will always be a power of two when uploaded. If it is 512x512 it shouldn't change, same with 512x256, 256x256, etc. You need to have the file you want to upload in the power of 2 sized image.

Read the sticky at the top of the texturing forum, entitled Texture Size, Pixel Counts, Video Memory, and File Formats. It explains pretty much everything you need to know on this subject.

The short answer is all textures in SL must be measurable in powers of two. This is a requirement of OpenGL, and holds true for all OpenGL applications.

I just uploaded a 512x512 image and it uploaded to 512x256, any reason for that?

Nvm, Photoshop lied to me. :) Thanks for the link.

If you want to use a texture/picture that does not conform to the set sizes used in SL, simply make the picture/texture canvas the SL size and only place your own picture/texture on the portion you want to show, then apply that to a prim and use offsets and repeats per face count, to align just that portion onto a prim of the correct size. I do this all the time when aligning movies to a media texture. Remember, when resizing the prim, use aspect ratio (drag it bigger/smaller using the corner blocks only) and check the 'stretch texture' as well.
