Keeping snapshots inworld?

I'm probably missing something obvious, but is there any way to take a snapshot and keep it inworld?

I've been saving my snapshots to my hard disk, but if I want to use them inwordl (like for a profile photo), I've had to upload them and pay L$10 in the process. Every once in awhile that's not a big deal, but over time it does add up.

So am I missing a way to simply store a snapshot directly in my Photo Album folder in Inventory?

And while I'm on the subject, I tried checking the "High Resolution Snapshot" option from the Client menu (if I'm remembering that menu correctly) and didn't see any difference in the snapshot quality when I opened them in Photoshop.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Dunno about the resolution issue, and for that matter, aspect ratio - I'm still struggling with those - but unfortunately paying the $L10 sink to upload is the only way to get the photo in-world. Remember that a snapshot is simply a capture of the scene as rendered in your viewer. It exists locally, not in-world. To get it in world it needs to be uploaded. That'll be 10 bucks.

when you hit the "snapshot" button at the bottom of the screen.. it brings up a menu...

it says "Snapshot Preview"..
"What would you like to do?"

*Send a Postcard
*Upload a snapshot
*Save snapshot to hard drive

Select "upload a snapshot" to upload directly to SL.. it'll still cost you 10L per snapshot though.

~~

as for the size it also says:

"What size image do you need?"

Depending on what you selected for "What would you like to do?" you'll be given different size options you can upload or save to disk with... select the one you want there.

Is it free to send a postcard? If so, perhaps you could send it to an alt or a friend who will give it back to you.

Yes they are "free to send" ...but. Postcards send to email. Not to Sl accounts. so they will end up on the hard drive of whoever you send them to. If you want it in SL.. you or the friend you emailed it too will still have to pay 10L to upload it.

Can you send a postcard to a resident inworld? What address would one use? I've always assumed the email addresses were to the internet rather than SL.

Thanks everyone for the confirmation that I'm doing it right, even if it wasn't the answer I wanted to hear!

Why won't SL allow you to take snapshots in-game? Here is my guess...

As mentioned earlier, snapshots are taken by your client program on your computer, not on SL servers. I'm sure LL could make it so that a scene is rendered on their side (in-game, on the server) and a snapshot taken of it, then saved to your directory... but that would probably result in a lot of extra CPU power when everyone starts taking pics. It would also make a lot easier to steal other peoples textures within the game, since there would be no cost to do so.

If you just want a photo type album that you can show to people there is Snapzilla. It has personalized web pages that will fit the web tab of your profile. You get something like 20 thumbnailed photos shown on the web tab. And it's all free because you are basically sending a postcard to the snapzilla site.

Thanks for the info, but no. If all I wanted to do was show photos I could do that on a web site easily enough.

The specific need I had was to send a photo of a new pair of pants to the designer, to explain why I was returning them and wanted a refund. It really grates to have to pay L$10 to show her the poor workmanship that makes this purchase unacceptable.

Snapzilla, photobucket, etc. would work for that. Send the pic to snapzilla, photobucket or other image storage site's email upload address, and give the url of the pic to the designer.

Of course, if the seller happens to have a publicly known email address, one could just send the SL postcard directly to them.

What a sensible solution! Still don't need Snapzilla because I've got several web sites I can use for image hosting, but the basic principle is perfect for avoiding the import charge. Thanks!
