I was wondering, I log chat and IMs. this of course is saved as a notepad file, I seem to recall limitations on size in notepad? If there any way to say use another text editor for saving? Also, if the file size gets to big, could that in effect cause various issues in world?

Also, Is it safe to delete "application date" - roaming all the folders files under there?

Try Wordpad or Microsoft Word. Both will open text files. Wordpad is included in Windows.

the memory limitations of various versions of notepad over the lifespan of windows is different, but in any case where i have reached those limits it simply says i have and then opens the file in wordpad instead. there are also available several 'replacements' for notepad with various added functionalities with one of them being more memory.

the secondlife application data folder has the file in it that contains your global secondlife settings, and each folder of each avatar name has user specific settings for that avatar. that is also by default where the cache folder is kept, and the chat logs, but both of that can be moved elsewhere in the preferences settings. the program's execution log is also there with various bits of information about disk accesses and server communications and other program internals.

some third party viewers support a command line option '--portable' which causes that folder structure to be created inside the program's own folder instead of in the application data folder but i do not know if that switch has been incorporated into the standard viewer.

as for the size of the chat logs impacting the viewer, i can only say that i have some logs that span over two years of time and have noticed no issues.

i save my chat logs to a new file every month. like "chat010110-310110.txt" etc. that way the chat.txt file size never gets out of hand. then again i am slightly ocd :) could be an alternative if you worry about file size?

just as a point of interest my largest log, a log of main chat, is roughly 22 megs in size and covers from Feb '09 to present.

In general, a lot of text management apps (wordpad, etc) will take a long time loading a large file as it is loading it all into memory. Try editing, oh, the previous day's web server log of a busy site sometime.

I usually roll over text logs (by just appending the date) when they get to be a few MB. Unless you are somewhere where you get a LOT of chat spam that should be at least a couple months.
