I like to check the current available last names once in a while, always on the hunt for a really great one. Today when checking them out I was prompted to join a list of communities owned by SL residents, like advertisement.

Does anyone have any information about this?

I think they are groups made for helping out the new to SL.

Just click on Join Now on the homepage. Thats the complete list. It shuffles randomly but its always the same six-or-so.
Am I answering your question?

Sounds like a load of crap to me. But hey thats just me ;-) You know before I was not so crazy about SL going open source all the way but now I can't wait. I wish the Lindens would just sell the damn business so some other company can make it good again.

The idea is to provide a quality experience for new users.

If I'd had a bit more confidence I could do exactly that, I'd have tried for it too, but, I just didn't think I had the human resources to pull it off. Still might try for it in the future.

One million new users per month.

That's one brand new avatar every three seconds.

If the Company is the only one supporting them, they aren't going to get any help at all, unless you *all* collectively pay the cost of it.

LL's registration API has been available for anyone willing to utilize it for some time now - and some companies and businesses have used it to develop orientation islands and signup pages that bypass the standard LL setup and drop the new user right at the custom OI. The invitation to participate in this aspect of the program was, I imagine, sent to anyone that has already developed an OI/reg API portal.

Here's information on the registration API:
http://secondlife.com/developers/api/reg.php

Before crying favoritism, keep in mind that this program was available for anyone on the developer's list, which is also available for any group to be involved in. Also, these alternative OIs are run at cost for the company hosting them, and a number of them include greeters etc. to make the first time experience better for new signups, and that also costs money out of the group's pocket. Like Desmond said, the number of new signups is so large that the cost of addressing them has to come from somewhere, either passed along to every SL resident if handled soley by LL or through participation with businesses willing to take on that cost.

Still can`t believe the are grouping people and location them on island. Behavior control and studieds are a little scray and should be handled with care. I hope LLabs knows what they are doing.

My alt joined SL through the L-Word portal, back in January or February. It was a nice new-user experience, with lots of neat freebies like clothes, skins etc. Their orientation island was quiet and well-done, I thought.

Can't comment on any of the other ones, though.

Well it's an estimate; I don't have all the facts.

More like, it's some smaller number, but an avatar every 10 minutes when it's after dinner in Irkutsk, and an avatar every millisecond when it's after dinner in New York or Paris.

Who knows... but whatever it is, it isn't pretty... and not cheap to deal with.

Maybe LL should have thought about that before they pushed for the media blitz to get Phil his first million.
