Open chat can be listened to by objects. IMs can't.
Any object that logs chat without the user being made aware is probably against TOS. It's come up before an I think someone posted the relevant sections. However, it is acceptable for someone who is present at that conversation to log the chat. |

Can they listen to IMs? No.
Can they remotely listen to open chat? Yes and this is, I believe, a TOS violation. _____________________

IM's are encypted and can only be intercepted via the server..but to cut a long story short .. no IM's cant be listend to just by any old person who thinks they are a super haxoor !
Your public chat CAN be herd from any location in SL if a bugging device is placed near you..on your land ... a friends land ...any land that has build enabled . your chat can allso be sent to another persons email address while they are not logged online ... and allso can be sent to ther IM wether they are online or off line your chat can allso be dispayed on a huge message board LIVE as it happens and to any location in SL . And yes ...It's very against the TOS _____________________

Since it is possible to write such an object, would it be 'ok' with the TOS to have such an obect on land I own soley to relay to me what my lucky chair says so i can advertise on the lucky chair group channels where ever i am so i dont have to sit in front of my chair all day?
that would be a great feature and would not be hard to code if listening allready is so easy to code but would it violate the tos? _____________________

There's already such a device. It's called the lucky chair helper, and it made by 0x Enterprize (I THINK I spelled that right) You can get one from the dispensor by the lucky chair at Le Gothiq Boutique in http://slurl.com/secondlife/Telea/194/84 What it does is keep a seperate database, each LCHelper listens to the text output by the lucky chairs and keeps a DB of the locations, initials, and prizes for each chair it hears. You can rez one inworld beside your chair and leave it and it'll do it's thing, no input necessary. It'll IM it's owner each time the chair announces a new initial and you can copy/paste the IM to a lucky chair group, but you won't get an IM if you're out of the same sim. |

but why would it not work if you outta the sim ?? thats kinda useless It probably uses llOwnerSay rather than llInstantMessage to inform the owner. llOwnerSay is limited to the sim the object is in. llInstantMessage is rate limited and delays the whole script unless a workaround is used. |
