Got an email from LL stating my account needed payment info updated. Ok, np.. I've seen this before on occasion. When I get there all of a sudden now there's the familiar 3 digit box to enter your CVV security number too. Incredible! Now there shouldn't be nearly as many CC's declining charges due to billing coming from UK, and for not having the CVV number. I should be happy, but LL made this new required number change on the day my Premium and Tier was due, and as a result, my monthly payment to LL failed for the first time in history. /me is not quite so happy anymore after seeing the red colored minus balance on her account page. I've updated my CC info on the website, and it accepted it. I know it works cuz I bought some L$ with it earlier. Is there anything else I need to do? or will LL rebill my CC sometime soon? Thx.

Yeah, I noticed the security code thing when I got that email, and I'm glad they're doing that. If your balance is still red, you can process your payment manually using the Increase Your Credit link on the right side of your account page. This will bill your card immediately and add the amount to your balance. It does have a minimum charge of $25. If you don't owe that much, the rest will stay on your account as a positive balance. You can either use it to buy lindens, or just leave it there for future tier payments.

Thanx Ava I was just wondering if they (LL) will retry processing the charges on their own (since billing did fail), or if once a billing fails, do they not do anything until the next regularily scheduled billing date? I think I'm asking just to know for future referrence lol. EDIT: Ok, just checked.. they DID rebill a day later.

I think 9 of 10 online shops demand it (most likely more). So why it is such disaster if LL does what very normal is? Morwen.

Don't feel too bad about having that red mark on your account balance. I had mine like that for almost 2 months because they couldn't figure out how to send me a bill

It was just the timing of it that was the problem, in that it caused her account to go into a negative balance (which has now resolved itself).

Here's a sort of related thought, possibly something worth considering. Two years ago I had £1200 removed from a CC, which 'remarkably' I got back one year later the result of a online fraud investigation instigated by my CC provider and Visa. eBay, PayPal, my Bank (and I'm sure your bank also) and my CC provider (and I'm sure your CC provider also) will all tell you that they will NEVER ask for details of your CC or bank Account via Email. I have had three E mails in the past twelve months from eBay requesting account information as part of an 'update of customer details', all appeared totally legitimate and yet when I queried them with eBay I was informed they were all fraudulent and had not originated from any eBay department. My advice if you receive an Email from SL is to first ask SL for confirmation that this Email did in fact originate from them BEFORE giving out any details. I was lucky I got my money back, believe me it's not nice when you get that phone call from your card company. Just a thought...

My advice if you receive an Email from SL is to first ask SL for confirmation that this Email did in fact originate from them BEFORE giving out any details. In both cases, the best thing to do is to go to the web site (eBay or SL), and see if there is an issue with your account showing there. My recommendation is never to use the links in email messages for ANY financial information site. Treat the email as a reminder if you think it might be legitimate, and visit the site by typing the URL yourself.

Surely it is impossible to bill a credit card without the CVV (or CV2, as it is sometimes called) number for any transaction where the card is not present (i.e any telephone or online transaction at all basically. What card issuer in their right mind would authorise a transaction where the CV2 or Chip&Pin (which is obviously impossible online) verification are not present?

Nope, not impossible, and actually quite common (I do a lot of online purchasing for my job). I've never verified this, but one of the accounting people at my job said that vendors who accept the card payment WITHOUT the security code can be held liable by the credit card company if it turns out to be a fraudulent charge (meaning the credit card company takes the money back). But even so, it does seem many card companies are now requiring the security code, at least for SL.

The merchant is ALWAYS (re read - ALWAYS) held liable for any and all fradulent charges, that are processed, CVV number present or not. This includes swipped Card Present transactions as well!!!
the CVV code is an added layer of protection with "Card not present" transactions. it still does not confim the card is not stolen. The charge will still be processed by the bank, as the liabilty falls to the merchant.
My commerce site does accept cards without the CVV, but I will definetly look into the details much more carefully before i ship an order, in most cases I decline the order. In a fully automated bill processing system that is not very practical and CVV numbers are required.
Please keep in mind not all charge cards have CVV numbers, ie corporate purchase account cards and debit cards.
Some people just plain refuse to provide the number as it is some kind of "secret code" ( i spoke with an elderly gentleman just last week who absolutly refused to give me the number, he faxed a copy of his card face and sig instead)
once a customer has filed an afidavit of the false charges with the bank, it is very difficult for the merchant to recover the funds and there are HUGE service fees related to the chargeback.
