This may be a very basic question but what do I need to do if I buy a skybox and want to position it. Do i have to buy the land it will be above?

If you don't want it auto returned to your inventory you will need your own land.

Del, all land in SL is owned by someone - and that includes all the sky above the land.

It is a common, early, mistake but if you put anything on or above someones land that is consuming the "owners" prim limit - so not only is building on land you don't own, or is specifically designated for public building, bad manners it causes real "grief" to owners who may not be able to "see" the new (probably unwanted) additions that are eating up their (limited) prim limit.

I hope you decide to buy some land and build on it or float you skybox in your own bit of sky.

It's only a mistake if you didn't mean to do it.

And your stuff only gets returned if the owner returns it or autoreturn is on.

I'm not saying it's right to squat, I'm just stating the facts :D

This is a valid point, but wouldn't that make virtually all vehicles, including cars etc, aircraft, balloons, and other flyingcontraptions, all illegal, unless used solely on or above your own land?

I'm not sure illegal is the right word, but it does make them tricky to use. On several occasions I have been 'ejected' from a flying vehicle because I flew over a parcel that was flagged to not allow object entry, or because the parcel was at its prim limit.

Ideally if you're flying around (or driving etc) you are only on / over a given parcel for a short time, and therefore you aren't adding to their prim count for a long term. Even if the land has auto-return set to a minute, you should still be able to fly across the land before then. Of course, if the land is at its prim limit then that's another story.

It becomes an issue for the landowner if you are building 'permanent' structures or making other use of the land in an ongoing way, without prior permission.

No. A vehicle is 'attached' to the avatar, and this does not count against the prim limits of the land it travels over. It's just like wearing prim hair or clothes or a furry avatar - none of that counts against the parcel's prim limit. (Though it may contribute to lag, if there are lots of twisted toruses in the hair.)

Getting out of a vehicle while on someone elses land DOES impact their prim count. If there are not enough prims to support your helicopter's prim count, and you land on that already loaded parcel and get out of your helicopter, at best, your aircraft instantly gets dumped to your lost and found. At worst... the prims you dump on their land might cause some of their prim items to be returned to them, as well.

For example, I have a 257-prim pirate ship, and if I successfully rez it somewhere else, and sail it onto your parcel, I can sit there at the ship's wheel and chat with you all day, and not affect your prim count. But if I get off the ship, I dump 257 prims on your parcel!

And then I wonder if there is anyone else like me who has a 6 hour auto-return so that others can use my land when Im not around as I am only there a few hours each day.
