AS a tester of this viewer for 6 weeks. There is a group of use that feels its not ready for release! PLEASE PLEASE Let us tester do alittle more bug reporting and then say two weeks release the client......Randon crashing, missing textures, lost inventory, Grey avies and object are only a small list of current bug issues with first look. If you let this first look viewer in to the wild steve linden. We might have more serious issues then we have already...........

I love First Look Viewer. But its just not ready...............

I had a feeling they would do this. Well.. now we all have to suffer the horrible bugs it leashes. i been using the basic viewer to avoid this... Now i may have to compile my own openSL that uses the old rendering system...

What I don`t understand why monday? is Steve under pressure to release this client? Why is it that when LLAbs wants to release a client NOMATTER what. They do it? And let us beta test the final release? First Look WILL be the best viewer buildt to date! But if its released too soon........well you know what happened when they tried to release vedio at the start. crash crash crah.. BURN!......

Da Blog didn't say that the old viewer was being disabled, is it? If it was, compiling your own seems as if it wouldn't work.

For that matter, it just looks like they are blessing the new client with a new version number. What is the incentive to cause players to install it?

Well they said 1.14 will be first look release......The normal viewer is what.1.13.3 (2) so it might well be that the 1.14 will be the fial viewer all the way around. Did not state it either way malachi.

This is disturbing... The regular viewer has been running really stable for me. I mean i can count the number of times it has crashed since the last update on just a couple fingers :(

The incentive is, I guess, that they are awfully happy about the FirstLook viewer's progress. And they don't use it enough to know that it is horribly broken.

I truly wish there were Lindens who spent as much time coding and building in SL as some of the residents, cause then these bugs would be painfully obvious instead of "the superstition of the unwashed masses". But I guess if they did that, they wouldn't have time to be Lindens.

/me sighs.

There is a potentially very big (and expensive) issue with FL right now. It has a persistently high network utilization.. on my machine it's averaging 300k and peaking at around 500, with an empty download queue. It's expensive for me because I have other applications on other machines contending for network bandwidth. It's particularly expensive for the many folks whose monthly Internet bill is based on usage. This issue alone really ought to be a show stopper in terms of moving FL to main viewer status.

i believe the bandwidth issue was addressed: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/03/21/first-look-update-59558/

and as far as firstlook goes, its the only viewer i use. and I Love It.

should be a fun SL monday, as update days always are. Blogs and forums will be full of the usual complaints. "why cant i log in", "tp is not working", "where's my inventory", "i have shoes in my butt crack", "everyone is grey", "they broke SL again",.......

Oh yes I love it too! But only when randon crashes stop, textures blurring stops, teleports starts farting mid way etc.............

I believe that you believe that they believe that the bandwidth issue was addressed. All I can say is that on First Look, I stand in one spot for 10 minutes and the bandwidth utilization settles down to an average of around 300kbps. On the regular viewer, standing in the same spot looking the same direction, not moving in either case, it settles into about 90-95k. Over time, that's quite substantial, especially if you pay by bytes downloaded.

They also haven't fixed the ability to edit notecards while the notecard is in the object. It's yet another workaround.... Very, very annoying for updating vendors that use notecards, or poseballs or much of anything.

Yeah, I'm a bit hung up on this one.

(Apparently there is a new version of FL out. I didn't KNOW this, because when the post about FL becoming the new main, it was (59558) in the post and download, so I didn't bother. Now, it's 59668? I admit, I could have read it wrong, but I doubt it. *shrugs* Lets load this puppy up and see how it work instead.)

Usagi, don't you use the First Look client anyway?. If so, why do you care if they release it Monday?.

Well, I tried the newest FL and guess what? The notecard problem IS NOT FIXED. No, I don't want it going live. I will not download it unless it's mandatory. There isn't enough FPS to make the work around worth my effort.

Payments to child prims still broken for some first look clients, though I'm not sure what version of First Look.

I'd have helped file a bug report, but the person who had the issue couldn't relog to do it.

>_<

I really hope that no First Look client with payment issues is allowed to access the grid.

Benefits:
water bug: fixed
frame rate: improved
overlapping alpha textures: look way better, to me at least

Particle Issues:
particle angle problem: fixed
particle shut-off problem: fixed (I'm still testing this)

Drawbacks:
Client reportedly crashes more often. (for me too)
Client network traffic doesn't quiesce?
Client reported has memory leaks for some users.
Touchable HUD issues over time reported.
Edit notecards (and scripts?) in objects unresolved?
Object edit's texture browser fails to look up textures in inv?
Pay child prim problems?
chromatic texture flicker (fixed for me by updating vid drivers, but doing so introduced instabilities that case SL and other 3d apps to crash. :( )

Particle Issues:
old particle functions: some lost functionality
particle density: sometimes radically reduced

No change from main viewer:
"asstachment" syndrome
invasion of the "gray" aliens
Stand/sit zooms avatar to <0,0,0>, sometimes for a while.
removes hooks to now defunct in world transaction history.
teleport
lag
presense
search
incompete inventory download

What am I missing? :)

Like most software development; it's not whether it's good or as perfect as can be...it's whether or not it's good enough dispite all flaws. Then, after deployment, they can work on all the bugs and flaws. The pattern has been repeated over and over again.

[/indent]The "l" in "incomplete".

I think this thread is beating one's head against a brick wall. The viewer upgrade is going to happen.

Nonconstructive feedback just wastes everyone’s time and as always will be ignored.

Sheesh. They'll be asking us to post C++ snippets in the comments of the blog next.

I suppose this was non-constructive:
Release-of-the-Day is symptomatic of really bad software development practice. It is why they keep reporting “we fixed X but found that we borked Y in the process.

Yes, someone might say “but this is Agile Development” which is groovy and hip and buzzwordy. To which the proper response is: “it doesn’t seem to be working so well for you, does it?”

Sigh.

Raudf Fox,

Editing notecards inside of objects was fixed a while back already. It was a server-side fix, not a client-side fix anyway. I've been editing notecards for a few days now without any problems.

As for releasing the current FL as the main client, I don't think it's quite ready yet either. I crash quite a bit, seems like a memory leak or something.

Tried it last night for the first time, moved better than usual at first.

Then huge packet loss happening, unable to move.

This in addition to a way,way wonky camera.

Going to check it out now, and see if that was just an aberration.

If not, and if we have to use this, I don't see that there's much point for me in continuing.

The trick is figuring out what problems are caused by SL servers and which by the viewer.

If you can log in with the current main viewer and experience no problems, then log out and immediately log back in with FL and not have as much success, then it's viewer related.

But sometimes neither viewer is going to work well with the server loads straiing to keep up with weekend traffic, and it's just coincidence that you were trying out First Look.

There are a group of us that have been testing first look since its release. Why we continue is because we want to see this viewer make it. Since this is the best viewer to date, and the promise it has. FPS are high etc etc etc.....Steve Linden knows waht it takes to create a viewer. Keep ending in those crash reports and bug reports.Every little bit helps.
