So I'm new hear, this is my first post on these boards.

Anyway, I got the default furry head and tail, and although I added my own clothes, hair, and skin color to my character, I'm still stuck with the generic orange fox head and black and white tail...Is there any way to change that? Thanks.

I think that avatar is called "Male Furry Avatar". All of the parts of it should be in a folder in your inventory probably named Male Furry Avatar (if I remember correctly). When something is worn, it will be highlighted in your inventory. Find it, right click on it, then select detach. Or just right click on the head or tail itself and select detach. Don't click drop or it will end up on the ground somewhere.

Right click on the head and on the tail and select 'Detach'. They are prim attachments.

Thanks, so it's basically a mask I can take off whenever I want...but what I want to know is, how do people get custom heads or tails, as opposed to the default ones? It that something that comes later, or what?

Check the major malls. Many vendors sell higher-quality furry avatars, like the one I am wearing in my forum picture. If you send me an IM in-world, I'll happily send you a bunch of landmarks to some of the best furry vendors in SL.

And please communicate that it's a Ringtail, not a Fox :)

You know I actually went into the Help Request session to ask them what it was....lol. Since they kept me on hold so long for my very important question; I right clicked on the tail, went into edit, and the general tab and found out it was called a ringtail...tail. I seriously thought it was some kind of fox/raccoon hybrid furry.

actually, right click on the head/tail and select 'edit.'

now (if you've practiced any prim creation/editing), you can edit them. however, you might want to create a copy of them before you do that, because once you edit (and detach) them, the changes will be permanently saved. although, i think the library avatar bits automatically copy themselves to your 'live' inventory when you put them on.

the male furry tail is the first thing i edited in 2l. i put the leopardskin pattern on it, and thinned it out, and made it a base orange colour to get a sorta psuedo tiger-leopardish tail. :)

welcome to 2l! besides the malls, there are several free furry avatars, if you want a selection. you can get a pack of them at most freebie places (freebie warehouse or freebie dungeon i think are the largest). there's a really nice black cat avatar for free, and some adjustable kitsune tails. you can get both of those at sarah nerd's freebie store. (they were free, though the signs said 1$L.)
im me in game, and i can send you some good landmarks.

The Male/Female Furry Avatars that come from the library folder of your inventory are actually built by Luskwood Creatures, and were the original avatars. They are indeed Ringtails. The clothing that comes on the avs from the library however did not actually come with the original avatar. :)
