Every time I try to open the "Second Life 1-13-3-2 Setup" application I downloaded, I get the following error message:

"The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus. You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy. It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED)."

It sounds like you probably had an error during download. Delete the file, and then re-download it from www.secondlife.com/download .

If it fails again, then explore the other possibilities presented by the error message. Is your antivirus up to date? When's the last time you did a full system scan? How's your hard drive health? When's the last time you checked it for errors? Defragging would probably be a good idea also if you don't do it on a regular basis. Even a disk that contains no errors can malfunction if it's badly fragmented.

Also, does your computer meet the minimum required specs for SL? What OS are you running? Do you have all the latest updates for your OS, your hardware drivers, and the latest version of DirectX (if you're on Windows)? All those things make a difference.

That is most unfortunate. You are trying to download the client directly from the Second Life website right? (I'm not sure if its available anywhere else.) Lately it seems corrupted versions of the installers are being downloaded. Most likely it is an error or connection problem during the download. You should probably try again and redownload the software.

If that continues to be a problem, try downloading the First Look viewer. This a lot like the regular program. It is in beta and experimental. It connects to the live grid and using it will be just like using 1.13.3(2) Many people claim that it improves their frames per second.

If you still can't get a usable viewer to download you might have to email the support team.

In exact ordered response: Did it; sort of; recently; ummmm; never; thanks I haven't thought of that; Windows XP Home edition; doubt it, doubt it, and I forget what DirectX even is.

I'm pretty sure this is a firewall or virus security issue. I had exactly this same error message when trying to download SL to a new computer.

My understanding of firewalls could be written on the head of a pin with a broadpoint sharpie, so I can't offer any explicit advice for changing that configuration. Fortunately, my situation was caused by one of the virus protection programs that had installed themselves during setup. I turned off everything except for Norton Anti-Virus, then explicitly allowed downloads from the SecondLife.com web site in the permissions area.

So check your computer security profile for similar blockages.

Try deleting the file that produces the corrupt installer message and then use a different browser to download it from. For example iIf you are using Firefox, use Internet Explorer or Opera.

The direct link to the file is http://s3.amazonaws.com/download-secondlife-com/Second%20Life%201-13-3-2%20Setup.exe .

If you use the Shareaza file sharing program, the file is available there, just search for Second Life 1-13-3-2 .

At the moment I'm attempting to upload a copy to my Google page, but it's taking longer than I'm going to wait to click the submit button.

Disabling security seemed to work, but as far as my experience....I need a new computer. Thanks, peeps.
