I used to be able to sit on objects from a distance, even fly thru walls or floors to get there, but lately my avatar zooms around madly and rarely ends up sitting on the object selected.
Is this another broken feature?

Yeah, I know what you mean. For the most part, I can usually sit somewhere. But a lot when I do, it happens in a strange way. And much more than back in the day I just move in small circles, before it says 'Sit Canceled'.

I know what you mean, and I'm pretty sure it's not a bug. I bet that the object or prim you were trying to sit on was a just prim with no sit script, animation, or poseball, right? If you try to sit on something with one of those things, say a chair you bought, a teleporter, anything like that, you WILL sit on it automatically and go through walls etc. But if you were to just rez a box and 'sit,' you would need to be right near it and at the same height level, otherwise you would zoom in circles around it and get a 'cancelled' sit when you moved or hit ESC. Same goes for a chair that's just prims in the shape of a chair with no poseball or animation spot for sitting.

Sitting on walls is one of the top ten cool things to do in SL while socializing. So much for progress

LL broke the ability to just sit on any prim, even if it was on the far side of a wall. Now, if there is ANYTHING in the direct path between you and the un-scripted prim, you can not sit on it. You can still sit on something on the far side of a wall if the prim has a scripted sit target.

One of my happiest Sunday afternoons in SL was with a RL/SL chum, sat on a wall outside the Three Lions with a pint in my hands just chatting to anyone walking past LOL _____________________

Should JIRA that. If it was an intended change in behavior (as opposed to a bug), then there isn't much of a point. It just confuses newbies and pisses off oldies. If it was an issue of security (people getting around locked doors), then this would be an incredibly pathetic attempt to fix that. LL would need to destroy the camera system and the ability to slide prims through other prims.
These days, you have to fly right next to and slightly above the surface you want to sit on before you get a successful sit. God help you if you get it wrong and you're standing in a skybox without flight assist. You rocket around everywhere like on ice, and possibly fly right off the platform. |

I LIKE the idea that people can no longer enter my house by sitting through the wall.

I LIKE the idea that people can no longer enter my house by sitting through the wall. The bad side of this is that you probably can no longer escape a griefer cage by sitting on it, which in essence was moving you through the "wall" of the cage. i guess it's back to the old fashioned non-physical escape methods. <looks in storage prim, finds one, dusts it off, and tests it to see if it still works after all this time> |

Good point. Haven't thought about that, because I've never had that problem so far.

I LIKE the idea that people can no longer enter my house by sitting through the wall. ![]() Another way is to rez a prim, sit on it, edit and then drag it on over into the house, stand up and delete it. Poof, you're inside. Breaking the old behaviour doesn't improve "security" in any way, it's only an annoyance to those of us that used it. Tp'ing somewhere and finding yourself stuck underground (you have to tp to a different sim and back again in some case since it won't always let you tp just a short distance within the same sim). Or clicking on the map and find that you ended up into someone's (locked) house (click outside and sit on the roof, or porch). There's a lot of reasons this was very useful ![]() |

You can still sit on something on the far side of a wall if the prim has a scripted sit target. When I started back in January, I could sit on a prim very easily, and usually in the intended place. But somewhere along the line, it just stopped working, and exactly in the ways everyone here is describing. I can't believe it never occurred to me that this was a bug. I just thought I must have forgotten some important "how to sit without flailing around aimlessly" lesson! ![]() |

Rez a cube inside the cage, sit on it, and edit it. Drag it outside the cage. Doesn't work with following cages, though. |

Also, "leaving" the area makes it hard for a griefer to cage you. I've used that trick a few times!
Heh, I haven't had griefer problems in almost a year and I go to all the same places! I guess I just know how to keep from attracting such attention or something. _____________________
