Well, I've been running around in a wonderfully spiffy outfit, and today I decided to add a tattoo. The tattoo came in the form of underwear and an undershirt, which I both put on along with my normal outfit. Promptly my shirt vanished and has refused to rezz despite multiple logout attempts, texture rebakes, removal of all clothing and replacement, use of a different shirt, and removal of the tattoo. Yes, other people see me as topless, and I'd rather not run around with my chest bouncing in everyone's faces.

Does anyone know how to get my top to start rezzing again?

The 2 things I would suggest trying are clearing the cache on your client and trying to change skins while in SL.

I've found that has resolved times I have had issues with clothing not behaving as expected.

That sounds like a really good subject for a Bug Report, maybe even a Support Ticket, since we all know how much attention is paid to "Report Bugs."

Lord, I sound cynical...

I don't know either, but it seems like skins can occasionally become corrupted, while a copy will work fine (presumably because it creates a new asset).

[Ctrl-Alt-D or Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D to bring up the debug menus]
[Client / Character / Rebake Textures to rebake]
[Edit / Preferences, Network / Clear Cache to clear the cache]

* Right-click on yourself, Take Off and remove all clothing (you'll want to be somewhere private and non-PG :))
* Try a rebake first of all, going into Appearance may help nudge it
* Failing that, make a copy of the skin (Click it and Ctrl-C), then paste it into another folder (Ctrl-V) so you can keep track of what's the copy and what's the original
* Change into a different skin altogether (use one of the default ones in the Library)
* Clear cache & relog
* Rebake
* Change into the *copy* of the skin
* Clear cache & relog
* Rebake

That usually seems to fix the problem for almost everyone :). If it still doesn't help, and you couldn't see the clothes when you changed into a different skin, you may want to contact the skin creator and ask for a replacement copy.
Lazy repost, but relevant :p. Give the above a try if you already tried clearing cache, relogging and regular rebaking.

Make sure it's not a jacket?

I don't know if this will help but next to your clothing are the icons, the vest/top & red jacket ones. You can only wear one of each at a time. So if you wear the tattoo next to the shirt symbol then put on a top with the same symbol, the tattoo will come off, if you then put it back, the top will vanish. So, if your tops a shirt icon, use the vest or red jacket tattoo & you'll be good. I have three tattoos & I had the same problem until I worked it out. Hopefully this is all that's happening to you! Cleared cache, logged out, logged back in, rebaked textures, changed skins, rebaked textures, changed skins again, still no dice.

I guess it's time to contact the support people.

Tattoo is an undershirt and underwear. Both have been removed, but clothing still won't show up.

Make sure to outline all the different things you've tried, or you'll wait three days for a "Try rebaking" response.

https://secondlife.com/community/support.php

Scroll all the way down to the bottom and then click "Log into the support..." and you can submit a ticket there, although the kind of problem you have may not qualify for any Linden attention if you're not a premium account, although it would always be worth a try :(.

(As a last resort, one other thing you can try is - from memory, so the menu options may be labelled differently - Client / Character / Character Tests / Test Female which will put you back into the standard newbie look. Make sure you know what your normal shape is, and other things such as bald cap since you'll need to wear everything again to get back to your normal self).

(Ctrl-Alt-D on a PC or Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D on a Mac to get the debug menus if you don't have a Client menu to the right of Help)

Some updates that confuse me even more:

I was able to get my clothing to show up after switching back to the noobie shape. As soon as I switched back to my old shape it vanished again, and switching to the noobie shape didn't bring it back this time. Now my clothing shows up if I wear another shirt with the main jacket, but it all vanishes as soon as I take off the other shirt.

Apparently this has happened before. Someone I met had an "emergency" pack of skin, shape, eyes, clothing, the works for people whose clothing has vanished. I put this on, it fixed the problem. I was able to revert back to my old avatar with only one minor tweak, I have to wear an undershirt or else the jacket doesn't show up. But, even with the undershirt on, I look fine (the undershirt itself isn't visible at all).

So, back to normal, mostly.

Disappearing Clothes
06-22-2007 06:03
Have had a problem before that's returned the last couple of days. Put on clothes from inventory, in around ten seconds, poof, they vanish. I look OK to others, but when I rebake, I'm naked to them as well. Quel embarassment!

Happens with nearly all (but not all) clothes from my inventory, though a few I've made with my own textures, as well as standard issue Library clothes don't do it. Have tried the previously listed strip/rebake/clear cache/relog dance. Anyone else seen this (and maybe even have a cure)?

Love 'n' pixel kisses,
Jilly

*very vaguely recalls something where specific clothing with alpha would hide the other layers on that part of the body as well*

That was a rather rare bug though, and it was many months ago. Maybe the above will jog someone else's memory better :).
