Can you give away an avatar?

If someone is ill, or going to be unable to be online for a while, is it a violation of terms to give your avatar to someone? If that avatar is non-paying so it's a "free" account and there is absolutely NO transfer of funds at all?

Under the ToS, you can't transfer an avatar - ANY avatar - without LL's permission, which they give only in very limited circumstances. If you do it anyway and get caught, there will be repercussions.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

The question was "is it a violation of terms" and the answer is "what Ann said".

Do people do it? I would assume it happens all the time.

Well again, I know a person who took over two accounts because they decided not to play or was seriously injuried. I mean if there is an agreement between the two parties why does it matter? There is always someone out there who will disagree. Isn't thier enough to worry about? Come on....

I have a friend who gave his established avatar to his wife and started a new one for himself. No, they've never had a problem and she's been running that avatar for the better part of two years, but it's still technically against the Terms of Service, which is what the OP asked.

We all agree to the ToS when we enter SL for the first time, so LL can and sometimes will punish offenders for breaking that particular rule. I'm not going to tell the OP, "Sure, go ahead, people do it all the time!" - even if they do - when it could lead to the loss of the account and perhaps any others the person acquiring that account may already have. There are risks involved.

Nichole, it may be perfectly OK (although it is definitely against the TOS). I would never ever do it, however...

By giving someone your av, you are putting your reputation, and your credit score, in their hands. If the other person is your spouse, or a trusted family member, that might be OK. If it is merely another avatar, someone you know only on SL, it's extremely foolish.

And I know of at least one person that logged in to another account and is now banned from SL completely.

It _is_ a violation of the Terms of Service, regardless of how many you know who have done it.

One other issue is that the older accounts asked for your personal info when you signed up. There's also your payment info. I think you can delete your payment info but you can't really change your personal info. There was a way to do it before but that way was closed.

"It matters" because it IS against the Terms Of Service that everyone agrees to when you signed up for an SL account doing so can get you permanently banned from SL - and that is what the OP was asking. Yes, I am sure people do it and most probably have no problem. I *might* do so with a very close family member, but probably not, even with one of my alt accounts that I seldom use.

Just for the record...

From: Terms of Service

Linden Lab may require you to submit an indication of unique identity in the account registration process; e.g. credit card or other payment information, or SMS message code or other information requested by Linden Lab. When an account is created, the information given for the account must match the address, phone number, and/or other unique identifier information associated with the identification method. You may register multiple accounts per identification method only at Linden Lab's sole discretion. A single account may be used by a single legal entity at Linden Lab's sole discretion and subject to Linden Lab's requirements. Additional accounts beyond the first account per unique user may be subject to fees upon account creation. You may not transfer your Account to any third party without the prior written consent of Linden Lab; notwithstanding the foregoing, Linden Lab will not unreasonably withhold consent to the transfer of an Account in good standing by operation of valid written will to a single natural person, provided that proper notice and documentation are delivered as requested by Linden Lab.

When I first joined SL about a year ago I was approached by a woman who offered to help me set up my AV for a fee - take me shopping for hair, skins, an AO and a couple of sets of clothing and would also give me a few predefined shapes. I declined the offer since I didn't have any money, but it was tempting. But she also mentioned she creates ready made AVs for people - signs up the account, buys all the necessities and delivers the finished product. I no longer have her name and I wonder if she's still in business.
